I need some help to one up an insufferable know it all

Hey everyone

I need to know if any Tarjay stores in Australia have public toilets?  I have never been in a Tarjay that had thier own public toilets, yet an insufferable know it all co-worker says that most stores do.

are private store owners allowed to charge

a fee for using the toilets?

I don't think they are allowed to.  But I think a small fee or 50c or $1 isn't such a bad idea.  I remember in Melbourne CBD there were toilets underground where you made a 'donation' to use them.  There were cleaners there all the time and they were spotless.

Maybe not. But you are legally obliged to have them installed and share them. Depending on how old the store is and where the nearest public toilets are, you probably have a unisex accessible toilet for people in wheelchairs, plus separate male and female toilets.

They are most likely just at the entrance of the warehouse or within a couple of metres of your back of house area. The accessible toilet may even be locked but within the front of house area.

The store will be a year old in April, completely new innards.  The only toilets we have are behind the locked door leading to the managers office and tea rooms. The towns public facility is approx 500mtrs down the road.

The store I work in is quite small, its in a small country town.

The DA for the store would have required toilets and at least one of those toilets will be wheelchair accessible and 2 will be ambulant (with handrails down the sides).

The law relates specifically to people with disabilities. A toilets must be available to them and 500m is too far to be accessible.

Not sure how a brand new store gets away with it. A lot of people would be in serious trouble if someone in a wheelchair demanded to use the loo and it was denied them.

found this:

The owner of Katherine's main shopping centre plans to charge people $2 to use toilets inside the complex.

The fee would be collected by an attendant and given to a local charity at the Northern Territory town, about 300 kilometres south of Darwin.

Katherine Council chief executive David Laugher says the shopping centre owner wants to keep its facilities clean and improve public safety.

"They experience the same thing that a lot of us experience in the provision of public facilities," he said.

"Bear in mind this is a private facility, not a public one.

"(There is) increasing vandalism, damage and just the general hygiene of the place."

Mayor Fay Miller says she supports the move.

She says people will still be able to use the council's free public toilets away from the shopping centre.

"The toilet facilities within the complex have been abused very badly," she said.

"You would need a cleaner there constantly, and I mean constantly, to ensure they were up to standard."

That is exactly what caught my attention with the Harvey Norman store I mentioned.  It was because I thought they had to have disabled toilets that I was amazed that they had built and were trying to get away with not providing any toilets.

Harvey Norman used the store size and the seperate entrances to fight it for a while then didn't hear any more. When I did visit last year, I asked about the toilet and got sent into the Harvey Norman store to find them.

Yes but the toilet is not limited in use to people with disabilities. It simply needs to be large enough to accommodate a wheelchair.

Tsk Tsk Grace, do I detect a sweeping statement there?

Just hang around here for a while and you will see that the ratio of male to female, of what are classed as 'know it alls' are heavily weighted towards the female end of the scale 🙂

Aren't they everywhere?

Don't go getting all logical. Doesn't fit with the rest of the posts.

have public toilets.
