I went to BP about 30mins ago to fill my tank. I grabbed the pump to fill up and a voice came over the loud speaker saying "PREPAID ONLY". They refused to allow me to fill up so had to go inside to prepay an amount of $80 without knowing how much I needed whether it was higher or lower. It turned out the pump stopped at $80 as the operator pre-programmed that exact amount. I have been buying fuel at this particular place for 12 years. They wont see me again!

Well it doesn't amaze me that here you are getting indignant because someone else doesn't think the way you do.
How about you get off the guys back for saying how he felt.
You're "loud". https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ib6THw-d0c8

This thread reminds me of the 'bag check' on exit from stores thread. Where a minority of posters felt like they were bring treated like thieves if asked to show their bags on exit and objected and the majority accepted it as a store security measure and where happly to comply if asked.
Lets face it, there are people out there thieving everyday - shoplifting, stealing petrol, stealing stuff from building sites, breaking into cars and stealing stuff out of them, etc. The retailers are taking measures to counteract this.. Lowering losses through theft, means less increase in prices to compensate.
The baddies ruin it for it for us goodies, thats how it rolls.Since the plastic bags went I sometimes take a bag to the shop/supermarket, fill it up as I walk around and empty it at the checkout to pay. I certainly hope they don't take my pic stuffing goodies in my bag and assume I'm stealing them. 😄
I have done that too. I work on the principle they will keep watching the person seen on CCTV putting items in their own bag, to see if they present the items at the checkout or if they head straight to the exit (where they can get store security to nab them)

I guess this thread invites others to say how they feel also? Which in this thread is mostly not the same as the OP felt.
It is a customers choice where they shop (unless you are in a one horse town, miles from anywhere else) there are lots of different petrol stations to choose from. Don't like one place, don't buy there...pretty simple. The owner/manager of the petrol station the OP went to isn't going to be cut up when he/she receives a letter of complaint that one random customer at 2am isn't ever going to buy petrol there again because they don't accept the store policy.

The indignant response is probably the a reacton to the shock experienced the first time a person encounters the pre paid fuel stops.

people better get used to it, cause they will all be the same in 10 years

I don't agree. Not completely anyway. It might invite others opinions, but doesn't invite being beaten off his own thread. I see others disagreed and managed to do it nicely...and easily.
Over here we pay first also and it doesn't faze me one bit (and I didn't feel the slightest urge to tell UFO that). You either pay cash or use your credit card right at the pump.

It wouldn't worry me either. Don't blame em, there have been so many cases of ppl taking off without paying.

The few times I've come across pre-pay manned servo's (The ones I mainly use have EFTPOS at the pump) I've left either my keys or a debit card with the attendant. One time when I was a passenger, I stood inside the store while the driver filled up and then I paid.
UFO, I'm suprised that you even use a credit card, don't you know that by using one "THEY" can keep tabs on you?

are you the only customer they have this policy for or are you being treated the same way every other customer there is treated?
this realy is not a case of discrimmination, nor is it a catastrophe!
