The Red Back spider in Australia is related to out Katipo Spider on our west coast and the species is so close if they mated their young would be fertile.

so depending how close the species are they can have fertile young

My point was that given the unlikelihood of even closely related terranic species being able to successfully interbreed, why would aliens be able to do so. Especially homo (allegedly) sapiens with even close relatives.

Who is to say von Daniken is wrong? His assertions are just as plausible as any of the godly explanations of which there is not one shred of tangible proof. Many scientists are currently exploring the possibility that life on Earth has an extraterrestrial origin, carried by a meteor or comet etc billions of years ago. The vast majority of credible scientists suspect life is not confined to Earth and the possibility of superior life is very real. Even Hawking warned us to be careful in sending messages into space. Given the age of the Universe, it is ridiculous to think that any alien contact would only have occurred during our technological era. Were they going to wait millions or billions of years until we developed a greater intelligence.  And how many universal species may have become extinct over those billions of years? IMO von Daniken's assertions cannot be dismissed as bunkum.
