If I have to pay to see the GP

I might just take a bit longer and get my moneys worth.

Usually I am aware of people waiting (but there will be less of them apparently) so I can take my time 🙂

Re: If I have to pay to see the GP

This will be just the beginning of the end for Medicare......

http://www.theage.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/tony-abbotts-chief-business-adviser-maurice...

Interviewed on ABC radio on Wednesday, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said by introducing the fee the Coalition was ''undermining the universal nature of our Medicare system’’, while Consumers Health Forum chief executive Adam Stankevicius accused the government of seeking to shift costs on to the states.

''In the absence of any evidence which supports the government's assertion that a co-payment will reduce alleged over servicing or unnecessary GP visits, we are only left to guess about what the true motivation for its introduction may be: cost shifting to the states or revenue raising," Mr Stankevicius said.

Australian Medical Association vice-president Geoffrey Dobb also criticised the idea, expressing concern it might deter patients from seeing the doctor when they needed to, leading them to seek treatment in hospital, either in the first instance or when their condition worsened.

“It’s unlikely to save very much money from the health budget and may even result in an increase in costs if care is transferred to the hospital sector,” Professor Dobb said.

Re: If I have to pay to see the GP

Hmmm I pay around a 30 dollar gap for most consultations for my DD on a pension card.  So I guess 6 more dollars won't make a huge difference.  But what I would like to know is, why is it that many well off suburbs as mentioned on the news last night have the majority of bulk billing services and yet in the outer lying areas or remote areas where people can least afford it we are paying huge gaps just to see our GP.  Seems crazy!

Re: If I have to pay to see the GP

My local GP practice bulk bills everybody.  I am fortunate to live about 10 houses away from them. Qld seems to have cornered the market on such places as I know of 4 others within 2 suburbs who also do this.

I can get an appointment same day or walk in for urgent treatment. Not so in NSW, about 3 hours from us, appointments can take 3 weeks!

Re: If I have to pay to see the GP

Everywhere bulkbills here.

I would have no issue paying money to see a doctor, one like we could find years ago.....I will not be impressed if I have to start paying to see quacks!

Re: If I have to pay to see the GP

I thought the $6 fee was only being applied to places that Bulk Bill?

Or do i misunderstand what Bulk Bill means?

I thought it was the doctors that didn't charge above the medicare levy, so there was no gap to pay.

Or is it ones who let you claim the medicare component in their office and still pay extra, but not have to lodge fiorms to go to medicare iykwim?

Re: If I have to pay to see the GP

well, that would actually make sense as anyone trying to avoid the $6 fee will just rock up to casualty for things like a sick certificate iykwim. (Yes, I know that some in an emergency will also cop the bill, but some people really do go to the docs for reasons that aren't quite legitimate. and yes I know I explained that badly, but hopefully peeps will "get it")

GP's disagree with the view that people go to Dr for frivolous/illegitimate reasons, they say that it's not true. It is legitimate to get a Dr note because some employers require one for a 1 day sickness, people can rarely get into the Dr on such short notice - so they go to the non appointment bulk billing places.

Re: If I have to pay to see the GP

yeah, that was kind of what I was thinking.

IJMO it is too easy to get a doctor's certificate.

where my OH works, they have to provide a certificate for even one day off. I suspect there are a fair few that simply have hangovers (or are still drunk from the night before) and thus, not genuinely sick when they have a sickie in all circumstances. Just suffering the effects of irresponsible social life.

and lest be hionest, in this day of litigation, I don't reckon that many doctors would really say to someone "you weren't sick this morning/yesterday" just in case they really were

anyway, maybe I'm wrong. But there seem to be an awful lot of sickies taken on days around weekends and days off.
