If you leave the phone on the table and the operator picks up what happens next?

If you have to call a phone company or utility company or a government department, sometimes it will tell you how long you have to wait. It might estimate 50 minutes.

If you put the phone down and go and do something else for 45 minutes what happens if the operator picks up after 35 minutes?

Will they hang up on you or will they throw you back into the queue.

Put your phone on speaker.  I think they would just hang up on you otherwise.

My pet hate is when  you receive a call, and an automated robotic secretary says: Bob Smith calling, please hold while I transfer you...

Yeah OK

It's awful isn't it ? I consider myself fairly polite, in social situations, but sometimes, you just have to lower yourself to thier level...as in......

GO AWAY - if I wanted to buy what you are selling I would have called you.....

Have you not heard of eBay ???   or shopping centres ?????

What type of phone are you calling them from? A landline?

If not, then a mobile. Put the mobile on speaker phone and carry it on you or keep it near you while you wait.

What do you expect the person on the other end of the phone would do if they say Hello? Hello? Are you there? and no-one answers them?

They can't hang on for 5-10-20-30 minutes waiting for the person who phoned them to come back to the phone.
