Illegal to sit for more than 2 hours

THE law must be changed to make it illegal for workers to sit for more than two hours at a time says a leading health expert alarmed at rising diabetes rates.

Professor Jonathan Shaw whose 12-year "AusDiab" study on the health status of 11,000 Australians calculates that 269 adults develop diabetes every day and says drastic measure are needed.

"We need changes to occupational health and safety regulations so it is not allowed for people to sit for two hours at a time without a break," he said.

"I think everything should be on the table - taxation levers, town planning, even the layout of office spaces needs to be reconsidered to tackle the growing personal and community impact of chronic disease," he says.

Professor Shaw from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute has run a 12 year study of 11,000 Australians which has found young people aged 25-34 are gaining more weight than any other age group.

The study has also found people over-estimated the amount of exercise they thought they were doing by 50 per cent.

People self-reported they spent 200 minutes a day sitting but an electronic device recorded they spent an average 500 minutes a day sitting.

Diabetes risk for our telly tubbies

The incidence of diabetes is five times higher in people who are obese and two times higher in those who are overweight.

Over the 12 year study the average gain in waist circumference among participants was 5.3 centimetres and was greater in women than in men.

"The trend for greater weight gain among people aged 25-34 is very concerning and suggests Australia still does not recognise the serious health risks associated with being overweight or obese," he said.

"The health and well-being of a whole generation of Australians is being compromised by a lifestyle rich in energy dense foods and low on physical activity," he said.

The study also found the prevalence of depression was 65 per cent higher in people with diabetes and they showed double the rate of cognitive impairment than those without diabetes.

Living in the most disadvantaged areas doubled the risk of developing diabetes, the study found.

The community needed to get serious about weight gain in the same way it got serious about smoking and gun control and water restrictions, Professor Shaw said.

Professor Shaw also advocated a tax on junk food, subsidies for healthy foods, standing desks in workplaces and stairs more accessible to encourage more physical activity.

A rule banning sitting for more than two hours might not go down well with employers but they should "look on it as a long-term investment in their employees," he said.

Illegal to sit for more than 2 hours

All done and dusted.

An expert wants it illegal to sit for more than 2 hours at a time....how that could possibly be policed is beyond me but I do agree we need to move around more, more suitable seating and desks should be readily available preventing strain on backs and necks too.

And finally...I'm not alone having supervised 4 hour long exams which drag out with students sleepy and lacking consentration ๐Ÿ™‚

So, what are your working conditions like? Are you required to sit for longer than two hour intervals? Do you have an ergonomically designed workstation? Do you get jelly beans?

Some people can go their whole lives and never really live for a single minute.

Illegal to sit for more than 2 hours

li.vish ,are there regulations currently existing in your place of work to make sure that you don't sit for a certain period of time ?

(I refer to posts about truck drivers and their regulations)

Please could we all have an idea what exactly is Off Topic ?

I'm reading this thread and thinking that some things may actually be on topic for the OP ,however could be seen as interperonal rather than off topic ?

Would you please explain what is off topic for CS ? The topic of CS is general none ebay related discussion isn't it ?

Is it to become a regular thing that mods will post on the boards ..if not ,I'm curious as to why this thread was seen as requiring it and not others ? From what I have seen posts are generally removed .Are posters being given extra benefit or a kindness in this case ?

Would someone please explain ? I don't know what is going to be considered off topic.

Sitting for More Than Three Hours a Day Cuts Life Expectancy

    By
  • ANDREW SEIDMAN

Sitting down for more than three hours a day can shave a person's life expectancy by two years, even if he or she is physically active and refrains from dangerous habits like smoking, according to a study to be published on Tuesday in the online journal BMJ Open.

Sitting down for more than three hours a day can shave life expectancy by two years, even if you're physically active and refrain from dangerous habits like smoking, according to a new study. Andrew Seidman has details on Lunch Break. (Photo: Scott Dalton for The Wall Street Journal)

Watching TV for more than two hours a day can exacerbate that problem, decreasing life expectancy by another 1.4 years, said the report, which analyzed five underlying studies of nearly 167,000 people over a range of four to 14 years.

The meta-analysis comes just two years after Australian researchers found that people who said they watched TV for more than four hours a day were 46% more likely to die of any cause than people who said they spent less than two hours a day watching TV. Those watching TV more than four hours a day were also 80% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

"Sedentary behavior is something we need to take note of beyond telling people to get 30 minutes of activity a day," said Peter T. Katzmarzyk, one of the lead researchers for the study and a professor of population science at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge, La.

"We have people who can meet that guideline," explained Dr. Katzmarzyk. "However, if you're sedentary or sitting the other 20 hours a day, you're still going to be at risk for that."

But while the evidence linking sedentary behavior to various illnesses is mounting, it remains difficult for many people to find time to get on their feet, especially if they work desk jobs.

"Try to stand as much as you can," Dr. Katzmarzyk said. "Typically when you're on the telephone you can stand with speaker phone. Instead of emailing someone in the office, just get up and go talk to them."

When you're sitting and completely inactive, 'you run into trouble managing blood glucose,' a researcher said.

However, Dr. Katzmarzyk added, standing shouldn't be an alternative to exercising, but an alternative to sitting. "Several studies show that when you're sitting, your leg muscles are completely inactive," he said. "When you're sitting and completely inactive, this is when you run into trouble managing blood glucose."

Researchers determined the prevalence of sedentary behavior by using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which provided data on sitting habits between 2009 and 2010. The most recent available data on TV viewing was between 2005 and 2006.

When looking at the five underlying studies, the researchers eliminated data on patients with existing diseases and were therefore more likely to be sitting a lot.

One of the analysis's limitations was that it relied on self-reporting, as people tend to underestimate how much sitting they do, Dr. Katzmarzyk said.

The study bolsters an emerging body of research that points to a number of dangers associated with leading a sedentary lifestyle.

Last year, scientists found that people who worked 10 years in sedentary jobs, or jobs that don't require a lot of energy expenditure, had twice the risk of colon cancer and a 44% increased risk of rectal cancer, compared with people who had never worked sedentary jobs.

And in March, scientists found that the rate of cancers linked to obesity and lack of physical activity, such as cancers of the kidney, pancreas, lower esophagus and uterus, rose every year from 1999 through 2008.

Id like to get a metal version of my chair. I could use it outside if I want to sit for hours outside with good posture.
