I have been thinking lately that how one country like Mainland China caused the shut down of another country namely Italy,  just like that, and countless deaths all over the globe and some countries are on the verge of having a recession placed upon them.

China has millions of it's own people living around the world but they are not armed, so we like to think, they do not represent any threats to peace anywhere. All it took was one or two wet-markets to unleash this cataclysm upon us all. It is stuffing up our daily life, family and freedom to commute to work to earn a living.

Not one angry shot was fired so it cannot be interpreted as a declaration of war. But, many has died. So, what can/should we call this? What is consider as the appropiate retribution by our leaders world-wide, towards China? Any comments?

Influenza kills hundreds of thousands per year without crisis - 60,000 in America not so long ago - so what makes this bug so worrying to those that have actually lived or are living through an established widespread advanced infection ?

Thi corona virus is coniderably more virulent and kills many times more people.  There is also no cure or vaccine.  The 60 000 in America was over decade.

Italy went from handful of cases to total shut down within couple of weks.  America has messed up in a big way; they produced 100 000 of testing kits that were faulty, so they only just started to test properly and so far tested less than 10 000 people, many places have no kits at all.  Few ay ago there were only handful of states with confirmed cases, now there are only handful of states without cases, an the deaths are mounting.

Unfortunately Italiy's situation has not improved since last Tuesday

Just shows how a situation can change so quickly , even in just two days

And our health authorities  must be in real-time communication to have decreed changes to our policy so quickly

I have just been looking at an interesting time lapse world map that shows the spread of the virus. According to it, Italy's numbers reached the 'over 500' mark on 29 Feb and they went into full lockdown a day or so ago.

My daughter's in laws are italian & the news they are hearing is it is chaotic in Italy, worse than media is even depicting. A nurse was saying those of 60 and over are not being treated, in favour of younger people, as there is just not the capacity to treat everyone.

I would think the number of cases there will continue to rise over the next 2 weeks or so.

In Australia, our numbers are still in the under 500 range (I think).

We can make improvised isolation wards out of shipping containers - maybe even a new export market

Re: Incredulous !

seasonal flu casulties in the USA and lessons for Australia

2019/20 hospitalisations 184,000 to 221,000 , deaths so far : 11,600 to 19,100

Now add this burden to encroaching covid-19 , keeping in mind servere cases are hospitalised for 4 to 6 weeks unlike flu

Is not winter yet here...
