It's not any kind of excuse but it was the way it was, in many places.
There are so many things we find heartbreaking and wouldn't tolerate today...................... slavery included.

Forced prostitution.
Clergy abusing children.
Abuse rampant in many aboriginal communities.
Torture and horrors in the middle east.
Dictators and their crimes across Africa.
Just to name a few.
