The 2014 Archibald Prize finalists have been announced, Tim Storrier's painting of Sir Les Patterson has won the Packing room prize, who's your pick for the big one? I can never choose just one.

That 'morphing' is an art form in itself isn't it? Mesmerising is the perfect word for it - I have had to go back a few times for a second and third look ..... and will go back again!
So many familiar faces and winning portraits - like a trip down memory lane.
Some amazing talent very evident in those Young Archies .... I had never heard of them either but what a great idea.
Ahhhhh I have often wondered about your training as your subjects, colour and placement in the picture challenges have always appealed - if you have mentioned your training before I must have missed it. Would love to see some of your work with a brush

I love to paint but I struggle with it, I'm not very good and find it challenging.
It's a goal of mine to seriously declutter my home and get myself in a place where I can paint and draw again. I just don't seem to have the time or the space for art these days, it's in the too hard basket, but I'm working on it.

I suspect you are too self-effacing cosmo given your use of colour and form in your photographs.
Good luck with your de-cluttering - it seems to be a constant source of frustration for many ..... no sooner do you achieve that than something comes along to fill the space you have created lol.
Look forward to seeing some of the results of that though - I recall now that you made some great contributions to that painting/drawing thread. Shame that seems to have fallen by the wayside.

That isn't specified in the rules though? It is specified actually:
'The prize will be awarded, in the terms of the will of the late JF Archibald dated 15 March 1916, to the best portrait ‘preferentially of some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia during the 12 months preceding the date fixed by the Trustees for sending in the pictures’.

**The use of the word 'preferentially' does, however, give artists some latitude.
** Obviously, goes without saying. Doesn't preclude an artist from entering a painting of a not well known miner either.
2014 finalist - Artists young son
I don't think young superman is a miner, yet.
The artist entered the painting as a self portrait of sorts.
All that's good in me, self-portrait as son Luca
Vincent Fantauzzo describes this painting as a self-portrait with his four-and-a-half year old son Luca as his subject and inspiration. ‘Things have changed so much for me since Luca came into my life,’ says Fantauzzo. ‘He is my priority in every way. He has made me much more positive, and inspired me to notice and appreciate the little things in life. He depends on me and makes me who I am.

I did read the write up on Fantauzzo. He has won the people's choice award 3 times, a packing room prize and portrait of Heath Ledger was highly commended.
Bali Nine inmate M Sukumaran entered a self-portrait of himself in this years Archibald Prize, his second entry (didn't make the finals). His mentor is Ben Quilty.

It's hard to choose isn't it? From my shortlist of 15 I've got it down to 5 but could easily change my preferances by tomorrow
Jandamarra Coad - Proud
Anh Do - Father
Dapeng Liu - Cao Yin
Bridgette McNab - Grace
Heidi Yardley - Julia DeVille

Cosmosgrove, it is because the more you look the more you seeand it's a mood thing and what sticks in your head - i would be a rubbish judge, would have to resort to names in a hat.

I was asked to judge the art category at our local annual show one year, that was daunting enough 😄

I imagine it would be rather difficult to choose a single winner.
After looking on and off during the day I think my favourite is the Archie Roach portrait Proud - Jandamarra Cadd. I think it would be the most captivating face to face rather than on screen. I've not yet narrowed down my 2nd and 3rd choices 😄
