Let's hope she gets somewhere with them, not an easy task. IMO Indonesia should be doing more to stop people smuggling.

"Ms Gillard and Mr Yudhoyono are expected to discuss asylum seekers, as well as education, trade and further business investment."

I don't hold much hope for anything amazing.......Indonesia can't just snap its fingers and make it happen...there are thousands of small islands that make up Indonesia, so I reckon it's gotta take a lot of manpower and money to police that much territory....the incentives would have to be huge......same can be said for Australia's west coast...it's MASSIVE, and very unforgiving (nothing like the East coast at all).
Past that I don't know much about the politics between Indonesia and Australia re: asylum seekers...(so I'm interested in finding out what others know)......what I do know is that Millions are on the move worldwide because war=refugees, and they have to go somewhere....are we missing the point maybe?..don't know...but I think it's time the cause came into the discussion and the debate should take place on a 'global' level. It's a global problem isn't it?

Her 'annual talks' were so productive before weren't they.

There has been a massive global spike in refugees and misplaced persons since 2010. The world numbers are phenomenal and growing rapidly.
I read that in conjunction with an article that talked about the countries that were most likely to accept refugees were other 3rd world or generally impoverished countries. What does that say about the humanity of those people in more affluent countries? 😞

martini, I've been reading about that too....and what bugs the hell out of me is that there IS a solution and always was...remember Frasers efforts to get all refugee taking nations to work together?...it was the work of a statesman, and Whitlam got on board to make it happen.
Not like todays' politics where the refugees get used as political footballs....I feel ashamed of the debate and obviously so does Malcolm Fraser...he quit the LNP in 2010 in disgust and now he's backing Hanson Young for the senate to ensure LNP don't get full power...he's THAT passionate about the cause of asylum seekers and that determined to ensure they get a fair shake....good on him. I never knew he was such a humanitarian until they released secret parliamentary papers on that period 30 years later...Notice how our puddle jumping media don't seem to splatter that on the front page?...too relevant.
