UNION loyalties are helping to shape the next stage of Julia Gillard's political strategy as she embarks on a cabinet reshuffle that will promote key allies while sparing some of those who plotted against her last week.

The Prime Minister is expected to reward the unions for their support in last Thursday's leadership contest by pressing ahead with policies that meet their demands for stronger bargaining rights and working conditions.

The reshuffle, tipped to be revealed today, is expected to see Gary Gray promoted to federal cabinet as resources and energy minister, while a slew of Gillard supporters would gain positions as ministers and parliamentary secretaries.

The unions are not big evil monsters.

They are there to help working people.

They are managed and owned by those people who do get to vote on who they want in positions of power within the union.

Businesses have their own "unions" in the Chambers of Commerce, Aus Industry Group, etc. with more money and power than any union.

A company I worked for used an Aus Industry Group sponsored QC at a tribunal hearing.  Who can compete against that sort of power and money?  Fortunately the tribunal thought it overkill so the company left him behind for the next hearing.

It seems that you think it's OK for the companies to form groups to fight against employees but not OK for the employees to form groups to fight for a fair deal.

One of the people in the group I took to the tribunal was a union representative. Instead of taking a QC to fight me she actually listened and informed me of steps they (union) had taken to avoid the same issues arising in the future.  Because of that she got my number 1 vote when she stood for Senate election some time later.

In case you're wondering I took the company and the union to the tribunal.    :^O

The difference was in the way they handled the matter.

Unions are fine... I have no problem if people want to join them...

But they have no place controlling the PM and the government...

Union members are in the minority so why should unions set the policy for the majority?

Newspaper owners have no right to control the PM or government either but you don't seem to have a problem with that concept.  They are a definite minority and I last week you were fighting against any perceived control over what they print.

Miners are in the minority too but you don't seem to have a problem with them setting the agenda for the rest of us.
