OMG you spoke to Amazon on the phone? You poor thing. Last time I spoke to them on the phone I was ready to throw the phone through the window, they are so frustrating.
The last time I had to contact them I did it via livechat as I couldn't face speaking to them (having a hearing impairment doesn't help). They kept telling me to put a code in the kindle (which didn't work) but they would then call this code something completely different. I finally worked it out myself what I needed to do.
What has Amazon offered to do? Replace free of charge?

I know somewhere way back there some of you were talking about covers/lights for your Kindle. Which ones did you get? I was looking at the ones on the A site but the reviews for the Kindle 4 ones weren't very good. If you got a non-A one what is the power source please and are you still happy with it?
Mine looks like this:

Nah, didn't actually speak on the phone...I used online chat. Took a long time to work out that it was kaput.
Only thing Amazon will do is sell me a new one for $85 + postage. I don't have $85 atm. It stinks that their product only last just past the warranty!

I don't have a light in my cover, I paid $10 for a pink leather? one....but mostly I use that for travel, I use a silicone one daily.
I read that the lighted covers can actually cause problems with the kindle.
I am getting worried, I bought mine around the same time as dyno.......but so far so good. I do have a Kandle and another bendy clip light, both powered by a battery.....like a watch battery but bigger.

I also read their forum some have told them that $85 is too much so they reduce it to $60.

Its not good enough IMO, according to our laws we have a reasonable expectation that something will last a decent amount of time, eg a fridge lasting 10 years.
I'm not sure if you could take it up with Consumer Affairs. Did you buy the Kindle from a B&M store in Aust, or through the A site?

Yeah, I agree its not good enough. I got it directly from Amazon. They weren't selling them in Aus back then.
