Kiva loan :)

Aww my 14 year old son just happily paid for a Kiva loan out of his own money. I suggested it to him after showing him the one I did last night and he didn't hesitate to say yes.

Just a little bit proud that he did that :-x

I have had approx $45 (a couple of weeks of takeaway coffee!) that hasn't been repaid which comes to about 2.5% (I think!) of what I have loaned/reloaned - considering the strife in some of the countries I have chosen, I am happy with that outcome - and pleased that I have been able to assist so many people in the 2+ years since I joined.

I'm not sure why Sam Mankiewicz (responsible for IT) has been singled out by rabbit but I found the experiences of many of the team interesting reading.

OK then, I'll bet Premal Shah lives in one too. There seem to be a lot of Presidents and Vice Presidents and Chiefs. I counted 97 management and staff - I'd bet none of them are on the basic wage. Where do you think all that money comes from? The Easter Bunny?

They are looking for more staff http://www.kiva.org/careers - must be doing very well.

OK then, let's take a look at Premal Shah.

Premal Shah
CEO/President
Premal Shah leads Kiva.org, a website that allows you to lend $25 to the working poor.

Since 2005, Kiva lenders have financed over 1 million low-income entrepreneurs from 75 countries, with a 98% repayment rate.
The site has been named as one of Oprah's Favorite Things and a Top 50 Website by TIME Magazine.

Premalโ€™s inspiration for Kiva came in 2004. Working for several years at PayPal, he took 2 months off to volunteer in India. There he worked with low-income women to help them sell handcrafts online. While the project had mixed results, it strengthened his belief that the right combination of technology, business and love can dramatically accelerate opportunity for those most left out.

Today with a burgeoning community of 1 million Kiva lenders, this belief becomes more of a reality each day. For his work as a social entrepreneur, Premal was named on FORTUNE magazineโ€™s โ€œTop 40 under 40โ€ณ list.

Premal is a graduate of Stanford University.

and .....? Are you saying that because he graduated from Stanford University, that he is somehow above reproach? I don't know the man and he may be the best human being on the planet, but ... what I do question is what he says on the site 'every dollar goes to help ..", when quite obviously there are MILLIONS that go toward the wages of all those staff, presumably they have office space, cars, electric bills and every other expense that a 'normal' business has ... where does all that money come from?

You seem very judgemental of this one, despite it's transparency and good rating. Just wondered which charity you would recommend instead?

Rabbits just came in all guns blazing and doesn't know how to admit that he was wrong.

There are many good charities.  It takes people and money to run them.  That's the way it is.

I am thinking about setting one up based on their business plan - it is brilliant. All income - No Risks - No Tax - what more could you ask for?

No relax. By necessity, they all have to be the same. They all have a similar hierachy - with REALLY HIGH PAID CEOs and MANAGEMENT TEAMS  - it's just that most of them don't try to baffle people into thinking they take no money. Of course they have running costs. These guys are professionals - they don't work for nothing - no-one would expect them to.  And they probably are doing a lot to help - to keep the interest rates down if nothing else.

I would be very interested to see their Books.

No, I am not wrong. I'll bet the top guys are on six figure salaries PLUS PLUS PLUS.

I'm glad to see you finally realise these charities don't run themselves.

Look at the Fred Hollows Foundation.  Another of my favourites. Also Medicins Sans frontiers.  All good and trusted organisations, just as Kiva is. Red Cross.  World Health Organisation.

Why do you not trust Kiva?
