Knitting for new baby help please

I have decided I'm going to attemp to knit a cardi each for the new babies, and have found this pattern which I'm assured I should be able to manage ๐Ÿ˜จ

Can someone help me with the sizing please. I think the smallest one seems way too small for even a newborn. It says it is for a 5lb baby - that's only about 2.5 kg isn't it?  Which one would you make for a newborn to 3 months?

Wish me luck! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„

Awwweee... congrats and good luck with the new arrivals. ๐Ÿ™‚
I love that it is knitted sideways.  babies grow so fast, i would probably suggest the larger size.

My hat's off to anyone who can knit well. I was taught it in primary school, i made one mitten!  I never attempted anything since.  LOL

No.

3ply, 4 ply, 5 ply, Double Knit (8ply), 10 ply, 12 ply

3ply is the finest for knitting baby clothes. Usually the baby knit patterns are in 3ply and 4 ply.

Does that mean that I should have put 2 strands of 3ply together (to create 6 ply) on my 1940's pattern?

Mind you the jumper that I knitted came out beautifully.

I'm with you Janeababe. I knitted a jumper once and didn't do very well.
Skinny arms and high neck, felt like a straitjacket.

My mother in law was very talented, I have kept the shawl and matinee outfit she made for our firstborn.

A good friend is a beautiful and very creative knitter. She has already knitted one baby blanket and is now onto the next. They are the most intricate, stunning designs with cats and rocking horses and hearts and ......... And then she backs them with gorgeous minky fabric.

We are a very lucky family to have her as a friend ๐Ÿ˜€ She makes my efforts look very paltry

Goodluck with the cardie Lurker, and thanks because now I feel like knitting ๐Ÿ˜‰  My mum is an amazing knitter and so fast.  She can do those intricate patterns your friend does.  I knitted a newborn singlet a couple of years ago, she ended up finishing it off for me, she did say though that my knitting was lovely, I have excellent tension apparently...lol I'm one of those that starts things but never finishes (lucky mummy always comes to the rescue and finishes them off for me) and I'm pretty hopeless with patterns, it's gotta be real simple.

Cardi is all finished except for sewing on the buttons (we don't know if they are to be pink or blue yet).  Baby should be arriving sometime today or overnight.

I'm very excited ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„
