Ivanpah, the world's largest group of solar/thermal power plants has come online.

The plants function by reflecting sunlight at giant towers containing water.  The water boils and generates steam which turn turbines and produce electricity.  The three plants, combined, generate enough power to fuel 140,000 homes every day.  In order for a coal, oil or methane ("natural" gas) plant to power than many homes for 25 years, it would need to burn 13 MILLION TONS of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

We here, have so much land, sunshine etc. It's glaringly obvious. Such a great idea !!!! and it photographs beautifully. 🙂

I so believe Solar is the way to go, but certain people would not make as much money.

That's to be expected, one can't really blame another for trying to make alot of money. But one can often go off in their own direction. Put solar panels on their roof or set up their own wind or watermill. Some places have natural gas just coming out of the ground. I have known those in Kentucky who tapped into that for free heating and cooking. Solar pannel kits, car conversion kits from gas to electric. The neighbors see it, get curious, ask questions, and it spreads until those who are making all that money starts noticing that their days are numbered unless they change to satisfy demand.

If we are willing to buy something at the current price, then we create demand for it. The key to clean energy is creating demand for it by generating intrest. Not only in the money one can save, but the pride in being self sufficent. To be the only one in your neighborhood without a power line running off a pole to your roof. No one wants to be the first, to take that big chance, the only one, the outcast, but that is what it's going to take. A few will follow, then more, then it will become the norm.

a lot of homes have done that here in Oz, put solar panels on their roofs, there were incentives and rebates in place to encourage people, with our last govt. tp have them installed. not so sure if the current govt. is still doing it though

I was kinda wondering if you had property tax there. It's a problem around here because it keeps going up, uasally every time they push through a school levy. It's bad enough to where I've seen people lose their houses or have to sell them to keep from losing them. Now that I think about it, there are so many regulations, I'm not sure, depending on the township and zonning, if one leagally can do such a thing.

There was a story of a woman who was forced to let men from the electric company come onto her property and change her meter to a smart meter. For whatever reason, she didn't want it, and was willing to pass on have any electric to her house, but they wouldn't allow her to. She said that she would remove it herself or have it removed and they threatend her with arrest and having her home taken by the state if she did. She might still be fighting it in court, i'm not sure.

Another thing to consider is will the homeowner's insurance company be ok with it. Theres alot they will drop covrage over.

we  have land tax here for people who own more than one property (if the 2nd property is worth a certain amount & it has to paid every year)  We also have stamp duty. a one off tax payment ( which is pretty high) we pay stamp duty  when we purchase a property the higher the cost of the propery, the higher the stamp duty

afaik insurance is OK with solar panels

So those who own only one small lot with a house and maybe a garage on it are not required to ever pay tax on their place? That's pretty cool. It's nice to be able to actually "Own" your own home. There are some places around here where it's less expensive to rent an apartment than the taxes alone on some places, and not paying property taxes is only one of many things they can take someone's home over.
