Let's reverse the debate shall we?

Do you think that illegal entry into Australia should not be allowed?

How would you address that situation?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

That is a bit random isn't it?

Yes and no. Discussion about asylum seekers made me realise that I hadn't seen her for quite a while.

As I stated Assimilation is a myth.

But their children are Australian and perfectly assimilated.  Those people who came after WW2 and worked long hours in demanding manual jobs had no time to go to school, many of the woman worked in factories owned by their countrymen and with workers speaking the same language.  But most of them had a great respect for education and made sure their kids got as educated as possible.

The people coming here now are just as willing to work as any of the migrants/refugees from the past; it is just not quite as easy to get a job, especially if your English is not very good. Although, I bet you anything that the proportion of migrants speaking some English is much higher now than it ever was in the past.   And many of the newcomers are doing just fine and all are very appreciative of any opportunity.
