Literacy Crisis In Tasmania

At least half of Tasmania's population can't read or write properly and test results are showing a growing gap between Tasmanian teenagers and those on the mainland.

The latest global report card on 15-year-olds found that 47 per cent of Tasmanian teenagers failed the minimum standard of English, compared to 36 per cent nationally.

Tasmania's disturbing figures are not dissimilar to other parts of rural and regional Australia, but there is growing concern that the spending of more than a billion dollars a year is doing little to tackle the problem.

As Suzanne Smith reports, some experts say there will be no improvement without deep cultural change.

I was listening to the discussion about this on Hack the other night.

Apparently the schooling system has a lot to do with it. School finishes for most in year 10. To go on to year 12, students have to move to the city to complete their education at one of only 2 colleges.

Re: Literacy Crisis In Tasmania

Would you put "I expressed my concern" in the third person?

Singular or plural?

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Re: Literacy Crisis In Tasmania

Apparently the schooling system has a lot to do with it.

Their

They're

There

Two

Too

To

are all different words, having very different meanings and even, surprising though it might be to some, differing sounds and they cannot be casually interchanged in a sentence without causing that sentence to become unintelligible gibberish (and an offence to the eye when written).

Some forms of ignorance stem not from a lack of proper intstruction, but from a certain unwillingness to learn and to apply that learning.

To misuse the above exampled words is to demonstrate either laziness or ignorance or a cavalier disregard for the sensibilities of others. In any case, that practice is in no way "cool" or "chic".

If done intentionally or from outright lazy neglect, then it is a badge of the uncultured bogan.

Here endeth the Lesson. 😉

Wow, are we on our high horse tonight ?

"To misuse the above exampled words is to demonstrate either laziness or ignorance

or a cavalier disregard for the sensibilities of others."

I have never seen it written that misuse of words is done so it affects the "sensibilities of others".

"I expressed"  is first person singular, past tense.

"You expressed," would be 2nd person, singular or plural, past tense.

"He, she, it expressed " 3rd person singular etc.

"We expressed" - 1st person plural etc

"They expresed" 3rd person plural. etc
