Little vent.....

So I was out with my sister this morning.  We are very close and get on famously.  Her husband and herself make very good money, and she's one of these people who must have the finest of everything.  My husband and myself in comparison are not as well off, and this morning we were chatting about money/clothes and I told her I have on occasion  bought clothes from Lifeline for myself.  Well, the look of horror and shock on her face made me feel more than a little bit sad.  She couldn't believe I would buy clothes second hand.  She asked me what I had bought there and I wouldn't tell her.  She said, "Well it's not like you walk around wearing a sticker saying bought from Lifeline, so how am I supposed to know?"

Umm, "know" what exactly?  That's my point - you wouldn't know if they were purchased from an op-shop or not!!!

Anyway, vent over.  I just feel a bit disgusted and sad that some people think that way.

3 of my friends and a couple of their sisters and I had a huge bag that would get passed around all of us as we had new babies.  Only good things, nothing stained, ripped or worn out.  So each time you got the bag it had a whole heap of different items of clothing in it which you would go through and pick what you wanted.  All sizes usually up to size 2 were in it.  Then when we were done we would pack what we wanted to pass on.

I was the last one to have a baby and so the bag sat with me for awhile until we finally all decided that we were done with baby's and it was time to send it into life line.  The idea had become really sentimental to us all.

I'm going to buck the trend here.

My childhood experience was that to get your clothes from the op shop was the ultimate humiliation and proof that your single parent couldn't provide for you adequately.

Now in my maturity, I know that is not correct and have tried on occasions to embrace the pre-loved movement but I just can't.  I somehow feels like it's betraying my mum and her efforts.

My loss I suppose.

Growing up... in a small town... We got hand me downs as kids, from the *older* girls in town, so it was often pointed out to me in public, at school, on the bus etc... oh, I used to own that! At that age (under 12) it was embarrasing for me.
So, when i had my own children, there was no-way-on-earth I was going to have my kids in 2nd hand clothing. And I didnt.
I, on the other hand, always bought from the op shops, so to save the money for new clothes for my kids.

Now, looking back, I wish I wasnt so insecure in my childhood. The clothing from the other familes was gr8 stuff, and I should have been grateful instead of ashamed... but that was then and this is now.

I love op shops and garage sales....   BIG BIG FAN  🙂

I don't think I had anything that was brand new until I was 10. Either my Nan made my shorts and dresses, or I got hand me downs from my cousins,, Even now, my cousins daughter is wearing a coat that her Mum wore, another cousin wore, got passed on to me and now her..

I am a big fan of second hand clothes..

As an added bonus, my brother has the same size foot as me, so when he buys shoes and decides he doesn't want them, he sends them to me 😄
