I would think that as a society/community we would have learned the lesson of letting more and more things be sold in supermarkets. Butchers, bakeries, delis, independent petrol stations. Are we prepared to lose newsagents from our main streets as well?
Who will toss my paper onto my front lawn? What range of greeting cards will Woollies stock? How many specialist magazines will Coles have on their shelves?

In NZ Lotto has been available in supermarkets for 15 years or more? The counter is usually just inside the porch. They sell alcohol instore there too.
When I moved to Australia I didn't see the point of newsagents.
In NZ newspaper delivery was arranged through the office of the newspaper you wanted to subscribe to. Delivery of paper newspapers has gone down a lot... online versions available now.
Magazines, books, cards sold in bookstores.

Sign of the times I suppose. However a lot of newsagencies are family owned and employ others. Just another victim of greedy big business.

I heard an interview on the radio today re. this subject. Apparently more 'walk in' purchases are made by ppl buying lottery tickets than anything else.

Do we want Woolworths and Coles to completely dominate our buying?
Maybe I'm looking at this from my small town perspective. Shops and businesses are closing down at an alarming rate here, and I don't want another one to go.
