The news.com headline is written in a very sensational way and is misleading imo. Which Aust media tend to do when relaying a news story from overseas.

The following is from a UK news outlet dated today. 

Madeleine police are urged to hunt Ocean Club thief

SCOTLAND Yard detectives hunting Madeleine McCann’s kidnapper are being urged to trace a former worker at the Ocean Club holiday villa complex from where she disappeared.

A criminologist who has spent years analysing Portuguese police files has discovered information about the man, who had previously been caught stealing.

He lived close to the spot where a man was seen carrying a child, who detectives believe was Madeleine, at the time of the abduction.

Madrid-based Heriberto Janosch has written to Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange detectives with details of his findings.

The revelation comes after it was reported that Scotland Yard officers have identified three “prime suspects” in a burglary gang after analysing phone data around the time of the abduction on May 3, 2007, at Praia da Luz in Portugal’s Algarve.

The report claimed there were a high number of calls between the group after Madeleine vanished. It also suggested the gang was responsible for two earlier raids at neighbouring apartments, one of which was foiled when they were disturbed by an elderly resident.

Now Yard chiefs are involved with discussions with counterparts in Portugal on how and when to arrest the trio, one of whom is ­Portuguese.

Mr Janosch said that the individual he is interested in was not ­working at the Ocean Club during the evening when Madeleine disappeared. He said: “When I read the information in the Portuguese police files I felt it was important to contact Scotland Yard to make sure they were aware of it.

“Now I understand that the Yard is concentrating on three suspected burglars and I wonder if this man I am interested in is one of them.

“The investigation is reaching a very important stage and hopefully the police are on the verge of a breakthrough.

“I have investigated this case for a long time and it is my belief that Madeleine was taken by burglars and there was no planned kidnapping.

“She just happened to come across them when they were in the apartment.”

Doesn't make sense to me.Were the burglers worried that a 4 year old girl would give a detailed description of them and so abducted her?
Even for a career crim, it's a big jump from burglary to kidnap and murder of a child.

When she would have only seen them in dark, while she was half asleep.

Sounds like there is not much happening& the papers are desperate for a story.

It's possible that she woke up and started crying, and they killed her trying to shut her up - remember, the cadaver dogs did find evidence of a dead body. They may then have decided to take her body with them rather than leave it as potentially incriminating evidence.

A big risk of being seen doing that.. carrying the body out of the building/on the street. I suppose they could have had a van parked nearby though.

Having devoted too many brain-cells to this years ago

I can no longer bear even the sight of the McCann parents' faces

Who could forget the photos of the McCanns, posing endlessly -- colour co-ordinated -- smiling their heads off like rock-stars just days after their very young daughter allegedly 'disappeared'

Who could forget Kate McCann with her make-up, hair-styles, junk jewellery and alternating between her trademarked, constipated with 'grief' look and her wide smiles

Who could forget Gerry McCann as he posed before the 'game plan' whiteboard with its Masonic symbols

Who could forget their holiday buddy being airlifted from Portugal on Sir Philip Green-Topshops private jet in the hours after the child allegedly 'went missing'

Who could forget the early and swiftly purged reports which put an entirely different complexion on the goings-on that night

And didn't the cadaver dogs find voluminous cadaver evidence in the McCann's hire-car ?  

How many questions did Kate McCann refuse to answer when questioned by the Portuguese investigators -- wasn't it in the region of 42 unanswered questions, according to media reports ?
