A huge plume of marijuana smoke is hovering over an Albanian town after a police crackdown on its notorious drug trade.
Heavily armed police were pelted with gunfire, grenades and even mortars as they tried to rid the town of Lazarat, Europe's biggest producer of marijuana, of its main crop, the Associated Press reports.
The hills of the village in the country's south yields around 900 tons of cannabis a year, worth close to $6.5 billion – or nearly half the small country's GDP.
The operation in the village, population 5000, is in its fifth day has seen the destruction of 80,000 plants and more than 12.8 tons of cannabis while 80 houses have been searched.
Residents have reportedly seen the events unfold on live television, burning their own crops as authorities close in.
"What did I do wrong? I just wanted five plants like everybody else," Lumturi Koli, a 42-year-old widower, told Reuters.
"I should have been first to plant them because I have to care for my children."
While thirteen people have been arrested for drug offences and firing on police, miraculously no-one has been killed despite long blasts of gunfire.
Four have been slightly wounded, including two shepherds who were hit by stray rounds.
The raids have been part of an overhaul push by Albania and its new Socialist government to gain entry into the European Union.

People living in small towns have guns, grenades and mortars? So they really are protecting their plantations!

Sheesh, what happened to using land for growing food crops and keeping goats and chickens?

That's close to 5,000 acres. Wonder where they're hiding that then?
Next to the hemp farm?
Serious question BTW. Not being facetious

Abstract
Tasmania is the world’s largest producer of opium alkaloids for the pharmaceutical market. The area sown to poppies is close to 20,000 ha, and the industry is one of the larger employers in the State.
The application of science and technology has been critical to the development of the poppy industry. High yielding varieties and efficient production methods allow the Tasmanian industry to compete successfully on the world market.
Farmers, government research agencies, and the processing companies have each been important in the development of new technology for the poppy industry. In recent years, the activity of government research agencies has declined and their role has largely been replaced by private enterprise.
The strengths of the industry include its strong market focus and the close relationship with poppy growers.
Thank you, I didn't know that.
Do you still begrudge farmers the right to earn a living growing "mind altering drugs"...regardless of which country they live?

Where did I say I "begrudge" anyone anything?
I think I said more along the lines that I find it disturbing that ppl grow mind-altering drugs to put food on the table when they could just use their land to grow food.
And not all plantations of poppies and marijuana are destined to grow drugs for pharmaceutical use. In fact I think only a small percentage do.
I think most of them are used to create a lot of wealth for a relatively small group of ppl, and never mind the health of the ppl using their product.

So you do........ that's a pity........

The seeds are edible and nutritious.
They saved 1000s of australians from dying of famine in the 19th century........ and it did not send them bullmookoo
countries marked in white below where it is illegal to consume even non phsychotropic hemp products. In fact many of
the bonuses that are attributed to high THC hemp are also possessed by low/no THC hemp.
Australia and New Zealand are the only two countries in the world whose populace cannot legally consume hemp
products........ let alone medicinal cannabis

Food
The hempseed is the only source of food from the hemp plant.
It is not really a seed, but an achene- a nut covered with a hard shell.
Hempseed is used for people and animal food, medicinal preparations, and industrial use.
Whole Seed
The whole seed contains roughly 25% protein, 30% carbohydrates, 15% insoluble fiber, carotene, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc, as well as vitamins E, C, B1, B2, B3, B6. Hempseed is one of the best sources of Essential Fatty Acids with a perfect 3:1 ratio of Omega-3 linolenic Acid, and Omega-6 linoleic Acid, good for strengthening the immune system. It is also a good source of Gamma linoleic Acid (GLA) which is otherwise available only from specialty oils like evening primrose oil or borage oils. Whole seeds are made into: snack bars, cookies, burgers and porridge, or they may be roasted and consumed alone or in a trail mix. Wild and domestic birds love hempseeds.

So why d'you think the police destroyed those crops in Albania?
on 23-06-2014 07:07 AM
because the males had been removed thereby enhancing the THC and removing the seed content from the flower...
oh....and because the growers had not paid their "bill' to the police... i do not think it is one town BTW
"As an aspiring member of the European Union, Albania must present a cohesive and decisive national drug strategy to convince other EU member states of its potential as an addition to the union.
The last few years have seen an intensification of ASP efforts and a resulting increase in cannabis seizures and arrests, although it is also thought that the increase could partly be due to an increase in total cultivation.
In 2012, police seized 21.2 metric tons, almost double the amount confiscated in 2011."

For many years, Albania has quietly outranked all other European countries in terms of cannabis production, while remaining relatively unknown in global terms. However, recent events in the small southern town of Lazarat have sparked a frenzy of media attention, and cemented Albania’s place on the cannabis world map.
The Italian mafia also has strong links to organised criminal networks in Albania, and is thought to now be responsible for the majority of the traffic between Albania and Western Europe.
Cannabis is shipped to Italy’s Adriatic coast; from there it can be transported overland without fear of border controls, anywhere within the Schengen zone

and...........Money...profit, more money then greed for wait for it more money....
If marijuana was legalized worldwide......how much profit would there be in the illicit Albanian drug trade???
.... If the australian government did not need to spend billions on drug detection and enforcement and all illicit drugs
were decriminalized how much extra money would there be for youth drug education......???
Whose interest is really served by keeping the cost of illicit drugs high?
If illicit drugs were worth nothing on the street....who would grow them?

So there's only a demand for dope because it's illegal?
Why do you think it's illegal?
on 23-06-2014 09:44 AM
Why is it illegal?.....Because the powers that be in Australia are uneducated and gutless.....
