A former US Navy SEAL sniper who was responsible for 160 kills during his career has been shot and killed at a Texas gun range.

Chris Kyle, who wrote a book called American Sniper about his military service from 1999 to 2009, was found dead at the Rough Creek Lodge shooting range on Saturday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, quoting Erath County sheriff Tommy Bryant.

A second man, named as Chad Littlefield, was also killed.

A third man, identified as 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh, has been charged with two counts of murder.

Local police said both victims had been shot at close range.

Yes, Iza. Matter of fact I've just finished reading about his latest escapade "One Shot". The one they made a movie out of. Starring Tom Cruise. Ha Ha.

Jack Reacher would've been able to pick off a cpl of ex-US Navy Seal snipers at a shooting range if he thought they'd gone bad, and put the third man in the picture to take the blame. Jack Reacher himself was a top Army sniper, trained in the Gulf War, don't you know?

What I'm saying here is that there's something rotten in Denmark.

legitimate or not.. soldier or civilian,  killing is killing. its just legal under some curcumstances..  i dont apologise for that as its correct . a little harsh in some people's view i know, thats why i shouldn't have posted it.

Not harsh at all, you are correct, and you are entitled to your opinion. Unfortunately however, killing is a by product of how each country protects itself and pursues it's overarching goals.

No judgement here - I'm in favour of the death penalty in some circumstances - but I'd be reasonably certain that the people he shot weren't interested in some friendly negotiations over coffee..

Just as "our side" joins the Defence Forces knowing they may get killed in action, so too do "the other side" - for whatever reasons they choose to fight, whether a person agrees with war or not, I doubt that many people join their national defence forces without some awareness that the ultimate price may be their life.

I'd be reasonably certain that for us to boycott forming a defence force or law enforcement agencies in protest would not encourage other countries to do the same. Until we have sustainable world peace, and every country disables their defence forces, we need one of our own. Otherwise, who is going to ensure that you and I can sleep safely each night, eh?

invading a country that you had set up as a buffer against iran (as the US did with iraq) on a basically false premise remember.. makes any resistance from them legitimate. it was the coalition of the willing' that invaded on falsified intelligence and a lot of bs. so if it were australia and not iraq invaded the men he killed would be patriots. its just location that alters the perception.

I didnt think we were debating if we should have been there or not, I personaly dont think so but thats besides the point.

The people that serve dont get to pick and chose where, when or who they fight, they just follow the orders given

What was the premise (false or otherwise) for the invasion of Iran?

Yep, that's what they say, location, location, location....

Lake - it's not the individual soldier who gets to choose which wars we fight or don't fight. I assume this man was told he had to go "there" and do what he was trained to do, to do what he was employed to do - and these guys don't have jobs like you and I, where we can just quit next week if we don't like or don't agree with what is being asked of us - and a sick day for them is if they are dead, bleeding or dieing - if they don't turn up to work during their contract, they are imprisoned - what happens to you or I? We get a written warning LOL

Regardless of why these men are sent to fight, what is the alternative? Disband our defence forces and law agencies, discard our global economic position and capitalist economy, abandon our committments with other countries and rely on conscription of our own untrained manpower if we are ever under attack?

i suppose it helps readers remember who they are talking about. with sportsmen they list achievements as a means of identifying them to readers.
