I'm not convinced though that the owner would have taken a pay off - for starters, would the politicians be that stupid, because they know that eventually it would come out and if it ever got discovered it would be mayhem

Exactly - his reputation and that of his business and others associated with it have taken a hit. If he were innocent, why would he do that? Why would he take the blame for something in which he was completely innocent and risk destroying a family legacy in the meantime? Have a look at all of his business and company holdings - how much money do you think it would take to offset the cost of the possible damage to that? How would anyone making a pay off hide that kind of transaction and keep it free from scrutiny.
If he defended his innocence, he, his business' or his reputation would not take a hit at all.
He's a bloke - he made a rude joke that was allegedly intended to be private, he is no different from many other men. The hysteria surrounding this is just bizarre. We have seen far worse from women right here on CS. Women referring to other women as "ankles". Women using the c word.
Yes, his joke was distasteful and the disrespect shown for our PM is abysmal - but in context it was just a smutty joke no different and certainly a lot tamer than many other men AND women have told and laughed about.
