Breeders must be very careful because there are agents, posing as family looking for pet, searching for pups to ship to Asia for sale in pet shops, or worse for breeding stock for the local puppy farms, which are just horrendous - b.itches spending their whole lives in cages and bred from every season.

Nova, I am so glad that you posted this to spread the word.

Most breeders are well aware and very careful; not to mention that when one of us gets bit suspicious about somebody, it gets immediately posted on our breed closed FB group and everybody is watching out for them.

However, I have sent a dog to Hong Kong to people who were happy to wait for 4 years before I finally relented.  They do live in high rise with huge balcony, the  people have 2 dogs and they have a maid who takes the dogs for walks during the day.  The dogs are spoiled, and go for run on the beach almost every morning and over weekend, when at home they sleep on the white silk covered sofa.  The dog I sent  there is about 6 now and we get regular updates and photos.  I would not like to see stopping export of dogs totally, but certainly wholesale export of pups should be stopped.  Especially as there are also cases of whole litters being stolen, and they are very likely on the first plane out for Asia.  Any dog being exported should have to have a very sound provenance.

Re: Mini long haired dachsund

For every dog bought from a breeder there is a dog in a pound being put to death because you chose to not rescue it but instead buy  a new one.

please visit a pound, i am sure there will be a dog or a cat that will make your heart go all warm and fuzzy. Heart

the word dachsund means badgerand. what you mean is a Dachshund btw.

My daughter, who is an international all breeds dog judge......I was looking or a little dog and knew she would point me in the right direction re a reputable registered breeder.

She said to me...Mum, save a dog's life....let's go the the pound.

And we did....I couldn't make up my mind out of  two, and took them both.

They brought even more joy into my already wonderful life.

Kennedia is right.....For every dog bought from a breeder there is a dog in a pound being put to death because you chose to not rescue it but instead buy  a new one.

Re: Mini long haired dachsund

Never mind freshwater. Robot Happy

when i was a child my parents thought that it would be a good idea to have a dog to teach us how to share etc.

my dads requirements for the dog were: female and friendly to children.

people from the pound brought her to us (i don't know why they brought her instead of us going there).

geez she was ugly, but she layd down next to my mums chair and would not move when the person who brought her left.

she had no intention to leave at all. she was our dog from the moment she entered the room.

she was most loyal, friendly and intelligent.

her looks improved, her fur looked better but it took her some time to not lie flat on the ground shaking when we put our hands out to pet her.

she was afraid of fly swatters until i played "fetch the fly swatter" with her. she kept her dislike for old, tall men with walking sticks/umbrellas.

she was also afraid of being abandoned, but that disappeared when she realised that we would never abandon her and that she was a member of the family.

she was absolutely save and defended my baby sister from a woman who went "guchi guchi doo" bending over the pram.....*still giggling cos she looked like a wolf, being a half husky* mwahahaha

she also had the most amazing talent to spot false people. she would growl at them. as soon as we realised that talent we (i and my sisters) would bring home our new boyfriends to get them checked out.

the day she was put down i would have worshipped satan and sacrificed my not so favourite sister to bring her back to live.

it is beyond me why anyone would want to give away or beat such a fantastic person. yes she was a person, not just "a" dog like those white fluffy things with the brain of a banana.

Re: Mini long haired dachsund

Because my main concern at the time was that Fiiesta might to go to a backyard breeder in desperation to find her dog.

These are the dogs who usually end up at the pound.  This is why I emphasised the REGISTERED breeder.

Re: Mini long haired dachsund

If any of the people who bought a pup from me could not keep/want it any longer I take the dog back no questions asked.  Only happened once, due to serious illness.  Our clubs (here in other states) also look out for any of our breed in pounds and shelters and  rehome them.

If registered breeders stopped to breed what do you think would happen?  The puppy farms would step in and produce even more pups from dogs kept in far from ideal conditions. Even if their kennel facility is good and clean, dog is not a farm animal, dogs need to bond to one person/family, they need activity and affection, which puppy farm just cannot provide.

Most of the dogs in pounds are from pet shops = puppy farms; they sell pup to anybody who walks in with the right amount of cash.  If you contact puppy farm that sells pups directly, and ask for any breed or mixture, they will always "have" it.  That is how friend of mine, who much against my advice, went to puppy farm to get **bleep**zu x maltese, and ended up with something more like poodle x west highland.  That is instead of small dog with soft coat, she got something about 50cm at shoulder with quite coarse curly coat, and totally manic.  Or my MIL in her late 70s who wanted jack russell pup and ended up with black labrador X that would jump all over her and drag her down the street until my SIL had to get rid of the dog as there was danger that the dog will seriously injure my MIL.  Or the old lady I used to meet in our dog park who walked a rottyXbasset - basically rotty with no legs; they sold this dog to her when she asked for beagle or beagle X.

That is another reason why  dogs from pet shops/puppy farms often end up in the pound; they were totally unsuitable for the people who got them.  It's great if people can offer home to the pound dogs, but if somebody wants a particular dog breed the breed club rescue service is much more likely able to help.
