Bendigo is in the goldfields - beautiful old buildings, unbelievable gardens, right into sport, really good looking place.

Very multi cultural - stong Indigenous history, huge Chinese history (museum, gardens, joss house etc etc), heaps of Karen refugess, biggest Buddhist Temple and Centre so u can see it very multi cultural

What we dont have is a mosque. What the Muslims are planning to build is a mosque.

OMG = Shame Job = people are protesting, I am so embarrassed by these people. Why these people do this? Are they ignorant or what? Or are they really truly scared these Muslims (Who live here already) are all of a sudden gonna turn into terrorists cos they have a mosque?  This is very weird.................. they pray now but at the Uni, there be a prayer room, whatever thats called, they want there own place.

So I ask these people - "What exactly is the problem here?" And I get stuff like "terrorists, go home to their own country (When they say this I lift an eyebrow and stare at em but they miss it ofcourse)

Im not Muslim, I dont even know a Muslim but I dont understand one bit why we protest against people wanting a church, this embarrasses me LOL

Do you people have mosques near you? Is this a big deal?

Even if they werent allowed to drive to the mosque, the one in question has sporting, educational and community facilities as well. Of course parking needs to be adequate. In fact, I'm surprised with the size of it that they have only factored in 136 parking spaces, doesnt really seem like enough when you consider staff as well. I guess thats for the council (or would it be vicroads) to decide.

Victoria is really tough on any organisation in regards to parking.

My firm is redeveloping an existing building in Moorabbin at the moment and the parking demands are ridiculous. We have had to submit planning reports, parking analysis reports, environmental studies reports. This all for a building already standing and who's and use is unchanging.

So I imagine the controls for a new build would be fairly heavy.

Parking........grrr........when we extended a business building in a particular small city, we HAD to put in 6 car spaces only ever used 2-3.  Two years later the Council introduced a Parking Space Levy on the number of car spaces!

What???????  I can assure you that Muslims are able to and do drive to Mosques or prayer halls on daily basis.

I did say on religious days (when the mosque is at it's busiest)

This is the reason why muslims (and Jews) live so close to their places of worship - it has to be within walking distance.

Yes, I was referring to religious days as well ie Fridays.  They are able to drive.

Moorabbin's a pretty busy place. I know its probably a pain, but the more cars they can get parked off the roads the better for traffic flow, would be good if they could widen some of the roads but thats impossible of course. I live quite a long way out of town, but on the rare occasion I am in the suburbs at school pick up times or peak hours, its just mayhem, and thats the far outer suburbs. I hate to imagine what some of the inner suburbs are like.

Where the Mosque is being built is an industrial area, but they can be pretty busy too with trucks coming and going all the time. they'd want to get as much off road parking as they can to keep the kids away from the road.

Of course they are ABLE to drive as are Jewish people. But they are not supposed to as per their religion if they are going to their mosque/synagog to worship. The koran specifically mentions that worshipers are rewarded for walking to prayer.

I live about a 15 minutes walk from our local mosque and some days it feels like every muslim family is walking as there are so many people on foot even from this distance. I am sure it must be the same in your area meep although our mosque is only about 2/3rd of the size of yours.

In our case the parking is underneath and complies with the councils stipulation of 1 space for every 6 people (which means about 170 spaces). The womens entrance to the mosque is through the (underground) carpark but  whenever I go (usually for open days or if there is a festival) I have yet to see this carpark in any way full.

I did understand that you meant not able to drive as in not allowed and that was why I was surprised because no one from around here walks to the Mosque.

I think the 'reward' concept is similar to the Christian one about enduring hardship, which means that if  a Muslim has no other choice but to walk, even a long distance, they are obliged to and will receive special reward.  Same with Christianity,  hardship will be rewarded but its not encouraged, if that makes sense.   If someone drives to the Mosque, their prayers will also be rewarded.  I could walk to Church every day but not be sincere in my prayers or I could drive and be genuine with my intentions.  Its similar in Islam.  The Jewish people -  I'm pretty sure you're right, they are actually not allowed to drive  during Sabbath.  (Orthodox Jews, that is)

I haven't been to Lakemba Mosque for years now so just went for a stroll via google maps street view lol.  It doesn't seem as big as it used to.....

If they are not allowed to drive but some still do, then parking is an issue. On the Au Jewish website, it says the same no driving on Saturday but some do.

Has anyone here read the koran?

How many people here know what muslims beiieve and what they want?

Just curious.

Why? What exactly in the Quran made you ask such  questions. Haven't read all of the Quran, but have read most. I am an atheist but if for some reason started believing in a god, Islam would be my religion of choice.

Boris, what's your understanding of Islam's attitude towards women?

Have you read what the Christian Bible still says about women?

What is your point in referring to Islams attitude towards women?
