Mosques being built

Bendigo is in the goldfields - beautiful old buildings, unbelievable gardens, right into sport, really good looking place.

Very multi cultural - stong Indigenous history, huge Chinese history (museum, gardens, joss house etc etc), heaps of Karen refugess, biggest Buddhist Temple and Centre so u can see it very multi cultural

What we dont have is a mosque. What the Muslims are planning to build is a mosque.

OMG = Shame Job = people are protesting, I am so embarrassed by these people. Why these people do this? Are they ignorant or what? Or are they really truly scared these Muslims (Who live here already) are all of a sudden gonna turn into terrorists cos they have a mosque?  This is very weird.................. they pray now but at the Uni, there be a prayer room, whatever thats called, they want there own place.

So I ask these people - "What exactly is the problem here?" And I get stuff like "terrorists, go home to their own country (When they say this I lift an eyebrow and stare at em but they miss it ofcourse)

Im not Muslim, I dont even know a Muslim but I dont understand one bit why we protest against people wanting a church, this embarrasses me LOL

Do you people have mosques near you? Is this a big deal?

Meep PMSL at me being subtle responding to some other thread!! ha ha ahh no, I have no idea what Love Today wrote on another thread.................  and it not me to be subtle about anything, ive already been in trouble on this thread for not being subtle.....

One would hope people dont write things like that to cause trouble for me.... I get into enough on my own - thanks

Ele, there is only a small number of Muslims here compared to other places, I wonder if the noise is the issue, when I have asked noone has said noise.. hmmmm

Will be interesting to see how it all pans out - I hope they get it 🙂

Well, it was just a coincidence then.  I was reading LT's post and then this thread pops up.   Forgive me for thinking there was a connection but its honestly what I thought.

I'm sure they will get the Mosque.  Ultimately, it is up to the residents, not some vocal minority who will not be affected.

The Bendigo Advertiser went door knocking in Rohs Road on Saturday and could find no one bothered by the idea of a mosque being built on Rohs Road.

Not sure what you're getting at.....Are those reasons to protest against building more Churches?

not at all, the op mentions protesters telling the "terrorists" to go back to where they came from, some seem to constantly link any mention of mosques, Islam or Muslims with terrorism. Merely pointing out that christians are quite capable of terrorist acts but not much of a mention anywhere. The last invasion of Iraq (act of terrorism in my opinion) was done by a self declared christian who also said God was on his side. Thats what I am getting at.

Me too.

Google maps shows it as an industrial area, doesnt seem to be any houses nearby. Looks like it will be huge with sporting & eductaion facilities as well as a couple of prayer halls. Its supposedly being designed with a view to the entire community being able to use it.

The airport seems to have a bit of an issue with it being on their flight path and are making some enquiries and the council is looking for answers re future employment, expansion and who the eventual owners will be.

Buildlings are so ugly nowadays, I'm sure every architect has a lego fetish and cant seem to design anything thats not block shaped.

I doubt they have anything to worry about, Tecoma has support worldwide topping 100,000 and still couldnt keep McDonalds out. A few angry people on facebook probably arent going to be able to raise many valid objections.

this building is horrid

I think we have about 12 of them on Bondi, have one in my street. They will all be going walkabout tomorrow, they are not tight when it comes to Synagogues, they purchased the Sisters of Mercy convent here too.

As far as Mosques being built, so what? There are a lot of indigenous muslims and the number is growing.

I live in a suburb close to the beach where there are often triathlons held on a weekend,  also 2 large sports ground where footy or cricket is played regularly and in both cases all the local streets are packed with traffic, noise and people.  Does anyone complain?

Not a peep,.

I won't argue  about that.  Obviously, those types of people do exist and I think it is great that the Muslim Leaders in Australia have publicly expressed outrage about extremists trying to influence Muslim youth.

I suspect that if  other places of worship such as Churches, Temples or Synagogues were used by radicals to influence their youth in similar ways, we would also hear from the vocal minorities condemning whole religions.

I have seen, even on this forum, some saying they would never support Christian charities regardless of the great work they do.  It is a shame.

The difference there is that sports are traditionally played on weekends...Mosques attract crowds during to week.

Would those same residents like the sporting crowds around all the week?

I grew up in one of the older established eastern suburbs of Sydney where the churches were all well established....Church of England, Catholic, Baptist, Methodist.  They were all on ordinary suburban blocks, occasionally double blocks of land, but there was definitely no provision for parking.  I went to a church that was within easy walking distance so never thought much about it.  I recently had occasion to go back to the area on a Sunday and I was horrified at how crowded the streets were around all the churches, but no-one complained.  They were used to it and that is the way it has always been.  In my day we walked to church...even my grandmother walked to church.  These days even the youngest family member has to be driven to church.

These days the local planning laws would not allow the situation to occur, which is why the newer churches are looking for a lot more land and have to provide parking.  I don't know why people complain when they go out to industrial or rural areas to provide what our planning laws require.   It also makes sense to provide other facilities too...schools, sporting complexes.

I would hazard a guess that some of the older churches would love to be able to expand, but they can't.  They are stuck with the facilities that were considered more than adequate 50-60-70 years ago but now are barely adequate.

Haven't attendance rates at church services steadily declined over the last few years?

I expect the same will happen for all the religious serivices of all the various religions over time as the young people become more sophisticated and worldly and cease thinking so much about religious matters.

Well you could not tell from the area I was in.   The Catholic and the Baptist churches are very close on the same cross street but opposite sides of the main road so it was impossible to tell which church they were attending but the streets were packed.

The Church of England some distance up the road also had a very good attendance but it was a special service with many ex parishoners attending.

Many are too receptive of what they read in the media...fearmongering,gossip over truth and fact

and directing blame and hate onto others is a desired thing.

That sort of stuff (bs and scapegoating) can bring power to the wrong people .

I think people need to know the facts more than media hype fiction.

I don't think all Australians know much about the history of this Country

and Muslims in this Country ....just as there is evidence of the same in other areas of the history of this country and ALL of it's people.ignorance, fear and misinformation can result in hate .

Muslims have had 'friendly'  involvement and relationship (including a working relationship)with this Country and It's original owners for a very long time ..

I know when the first mosque was built in this Country

Three centuries of history

Indigenous and Muslim communities have traded, socialised and intermarried in Australia for three centuries.

From the early 1700s, Muslim fishermen from Indonesia made annual voyages to the north and northwestern Australian coast in search of sea slugs (trepang). The trade that developed included material goods, but the visitors also left a lasting religious legacy.

Recent research confirms the existence of Islamic motifs in some north Australian Aboriginal mythology and ritual.

In mortuary ceremonies conducted by communities in Galiwinkuon Elcho Island today, there is reference to Dreaming figure Walitha’walitha, an adaptation of the Arabic phrase Allah ta’ala (God, the exalted).

Call for understanding of Indigenous Muslims

There is a supposition that Islam arrived in the 1970s in Australia but in fact there is a hidden history of Islam in Australia that started with Makassar from Indonesia back in the 1700s and with the Afghan cameleers. And when the Afghan cameleers came in the 19th and 20th Century. And today some Indigenous people are not necessarily speaking about conversion, but will use the term 'reversion' - or a term that was used by Peta Stephenson who interviewed some Aborigines that converted to Islam. She used the term 'kin-version'. That is they go back to the faith of their parents and grandparents and some of them were Muslims. And for them this is not a new religion."
