Mosquito nets and travelling

Any recommendations?

Our son is travelling soon to all kinds of places and I keep reading and hearing conflicting advice about them and negative things about taking malaria tablets.

If you go to Malaria places, take some sort of malaria medication.

Or anti malaria med.

Mossie nets.
The old green Army ones are very good. Check them before buying.


Lightweight long sleeved clothes.

80 per cent Deet spray - bushmans, possible Rid as well.
Test before leaving on skin to make sure he doesn't get an adverse reaction.

Tonic water has the same chemical ingredient as a Malaria tablet (premiquin) it think it is called but in much smaller doses of course. Of course if he is going to a region with Malaria then take the tablets but dont forget there is also a course of tablets that have to be taken after return.

The Malaria tablet simply traps the bug in the liver and prevents it from spreading and the tablets taken on kill the bug. He may have VERY vivid dreams but thats about all.

Thanks, my husband had malaria when I met him after returning from Africa so we want to be cautious about advising our son.

We were speaking to someone today that advised against taking the tablets however have not looked into it a great deal.

I prefer the BOX type, rectangular box, string on each corner.
5th one down in your link.

The army ones have this set up.

The army ones also have material round the base, NOT net.
Helps when weighing down, hardier to wear and tear.

Not sure if civvy ones do this.




Malaria tablets - i thought you started taking them BEFORE you left as well ?

Its a long time since i took them i dont know what the current treatment is so check.

As you say, dont get malaria !

Yes you are supposed to, I am I guess more interested in the treated ones, it makes sense and I have heard about UNICEF distributing them however are the chemicals safe etc?

vicr, even in the army we dont use the net anymore but take the tablets both before, during AND the after tablets. wear long sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent being bitten as well.
