After several hours during the week clearing and cleaning up a messy garden my day started like this

Yep. But your northern suburb is a bit leafier than mine I think
Blocks are smaller I'd say - can't get the chooks far enough away from
the kitchen.

Chooks are allowed in Brisbane, roosters sometimes.

We can have up to ten poultry but no roosters because of the noise.

So I believe Vicr , plenty of 'em around here as well, if they are seen they dont last very long .... As you know it's a HUGE sheep area around here, no foxes welcome

Bushie, I had a fox family living under my house until the cubs were grown. They took care of the rats that were after the nearby chickens. I hate people who have chickens in the suburbs. Before the explosion of chicken herders, hardly ever any rodents.

Evening all.
My parents live/lived on a large block in a very small town. When dad was alive he kept chooks. The neighbours behind, next door and over the road also have chooks. The flies in summer are very thick. The chooks draw them.
Not against keeping poultry. I actually love to see them scratching around, however they do bring the flies.

This isn't a small town, it's a built up area with a city lifestyle. I know that small cat-sized rats have been a problem only since the chicken fad. Because that's what it is, here. Because they're cute. It brings rodents up from the river and then they have enough food to grow fat and multiply.
no extra flies though ๐ but I loved those foxes. The well-fed cats of the neighbourhhood weren't interested in rodents...they're too classy for that ๐
a few of the chicken people let them scrabble about in the streets, too. It's not good for the chickens to have irresponsible city owners either.
