For that poor little innocent baby tossed away like a sack of garbage down the storm water drain. I can't get my head around how any Mother could do such a thing. Never having gone through PND I can't fogive her actions as a Mother wouldn't you call out for help before it came to this?

Well that particular news story doesn't speak of the women being treated for PND or receiving medical intervention prior to being held in custody.

Media reports the woman complained of a stomach ache when questioned by police
Media is showing unaltered photos of the baby in some reports, while other reports are pixilating the child's image
However, in both, it appears the child has grazes at its right wrist and going onto its hand. Removal of the hospital identity 'bracelet'? Or caused when it was tossed through a hole and onto the ground below -- a fall of more than the average ceiling height?
I'm curious about the plastic
Hospitals don't wrap newborns in plastic. Further, the media cites health experts as saying the child was healthy and full-term. So no logical reason for the child to be wrapped in plastic -- unless it was believed plastic would conceal the odour of a dead child, perhaps

Safe Havens have been available in many countries for decades. As usual Australia is way behind the times in regard to the welfare of children.
If they were in place it would reduce greatly the child abuse statistics also.
These sorts of "baby holes" were in Europe in churches & convents for centuries. They are still there, and some are in use. You would think that in this day and age people would not have the need to abandon baby. And as other said there is no need for what the mother did, but who knows what happened. Most likely she is mentally ill. She also could not know how deep the drain was, the rescue workers had difficulties to remove the slab.
It is amazing how resilient babies are; remember the babies that survived for much longer when earthquake destroyed maternity hospital?
why do people always leap to the mentally ill defense?
How about she is just a selfish **bleep** who didn't want the baby and didn't want anyone else to have him either.
Australia may not have designated safe havens but there were so many safer options but she chose to kill him.
Lock her up and throw away the key and do the same for anyone who helped her or knew what she had done.

The baby is in care of Family Services.

I would think that (personality disorder, chronic depression?) because who in their right mind would throw a baby down a drain (expecting it to die) because they don't want it anymore?
Another mother might not want her baby but be concerned for its welfare and leave it on the steps of a church or a random house at thr front door in a basket with some bottles and spare clothes ( does happen & in Australia). Leave it somewhere he/she is likely to be found in a few hours or less.
Thank goodness the baby was able to cryout and get passerby's attention.

not all cold blooded murderers are mentally ill.

True.. we are discussing someone killing their own baby though. 99.9% of mothers wouldn't do anything to harm their newborn baby, especially not abandoning them outdoors.

she knew killing the baby was wrong, she hid it.
people are making excuses for her - there is no excuse for chucking your helpless newborn down the drain.
i have no doubt she will get off on the mentally ill or pnd card which is a total slap in the face to that baby.
