Mystery Plant

IMG_0691.JPGWonder if anybody can identify this plant.  It grows to about 60cm and in winter has lovely apricoty orange flower on the top.  Each of its leaves has little fingers, which i suspect drop off and form brand new baby, as they keep popping up in my cacti pots.  It gets severely burned by frost, but comes back,  and so far it got burnt before the flowere set any seeds.  This year I moved some of the babies inside.

On a side note Kazumi, are you aware your font size is a 1 when the forum size is 4?

Might be just me, but I find it hard to read sometimes.

That is weird; actually for me everybody's font here is #1 , and it is so little that I can hardly see it, so I actually change mine to #3 to see what I write, and be able to correct my typos.

It's far more than "just being a weed"

Mother of millions is highly toxic to  humans, domestic pets and livestock. The farmers around here ( and elsewhere ) wouldnt thank you if the seeds blew into their paddocks and the plants killed their stock

It is hated among most serious succulent grower/collectors, personally I wouldn't have anywhere near my garden

I have had it for about 5 or 6 years, and it only dropped handful of its babies in the next pot so far.  We get frost several times each year and it damages them before they seed out.  every year the flowers only just opened and then froze off.  Also there are no farms anywhere near here.  However, I do worry about the toxicity, and so I got rid of most of them today.

There are heaps of other lovely succulents around, that wont 'cause these problems  ......  I am amazed that any ethical nursery would sell it

yes, there are many plants available; I am very good at killing them.  I was very proud of myself having this doing so well. 😞

It was a huge wholesale nursery somewhere on Mornington Peninsula; "opened to public this week only".  I was lost and driving through the farmland with no street name signs, so I went in to ask where I am.  They had mostly succulents, and this was one I never seen before.  I thought it looked fascinating.  It looks like some prehistorical dinosaur plant.

But then again, nurseries also sell Datura, which is also unkillable and toxic.  My friend bought a house with Datura growing right next to the house, like an inch from the house, and her cat used it to climb up and jump on the fence.  She would get the sap on her feet as she scratched the plant with her claws, and then she would lick it, and got sick.  I was sharing the house with my friend and so we decided to cut the Datura down.  Not only that the stump kept sprouting, all the branches kept growing on the compost.  So we put them nicely spread, over the very hot summer, on the tin roof of the shed, which was in full sun.  When we looked at it at the end of the summer, they were still alive.  We also spent the summer trying to kill the stump; first by pouring boiling hot water over it, then some tree poisons (to hell with our green aspiration).  In the end we, with help of various friends, we dug it out.  But there must have been a root left, because few years later it came up.  I think it was stil there years later when my friend sold the house.  LOL

Kazumi, and lionrose, to fix the text problem........

Click on your Community avi at the top of the page to get My Settings.

Then click on Preferences, then Display.

Scroll down to Text size and adjust.

I'd recommend the setting X-large if you have to squint at the screen.

Then save.
