NBN.. no power no phone??

"There will also be a separate power supply box which includes battery backup that will keep selected phone services* running for up to five hours in case of power failure. *The backup battery only provides power for a phone service provided through a voice (UNI-V) port on the Network Termination Device. Phone and other services connected to the data (UNI-D) ports, and mains powered telephones, alarms and other devices such as cordless phones connected to any port will not work during a power failure."

Is this true?

So if I am without power for one week like we were this year will I not be able to make phone calls?

Considering that we were not able to even get out of town for four days and had a lot of people very distressed I would be very concerned that we had no power and in the future that means no phone.

Personally I think that in the right places poles are a very good idea... just like I think satellites are a great idea.... using what infrastructure we already have is important to keeping costs down.

That's exactly what they're doing. Using the existing poles, pits and ducts where they can to keep costs down.  Using the HFC and FTTN are false economies.  Mike Quigley explained some of the issues last weekend on Sunday Insiders?. The HFC doesn't have to upload capacity. The FTTN requires extensive upgrades to work and maintenance is high. Then there is the added cost of the technology required to make the patch work work together. It will end up costing heaps more.

Did you actually read the link on the thread I started?

Get a new splitter for your phone line... or filter as Az called it.. even if you have one might be time to get a new one.

Also speak to your ISP as they should be able to help you trouble shoot.

Remember the days of dial up???

Every phone call would disrupt the internet until I figured out it was call waiting... once I turned that off it was fine...

do you have a filter in the line?

yes, and i changed that to a brand new one but it didnt fix it.

My internet provider has done all the tests and it is a telstra cable issue.

However, they wont fix the problem.

When we get lots of rain and the internet and phone stop working, they come and do something to get them back working but its just a temporary fix

I hope whatever comes in fixes my internet.

My internet drops out whenever my phone rings and whenever we get a lot of rain.

These are wide spread problems and one of the reasons for the FTTP model selected.

I think your area might be due to start soon too. Not sure if you're just in or just out of the next bit.

It's one of the reasons FTTN is not the answer because the problem is after the node. So you'd end up with fibre to the node and no internet or phone when it rains.

Loss of landline with power outage is something many NDSL users have faced for years. Unless you pay extra to have both NDSL line, and a conventional landline at the same time. If my modem drops out, no phone. And to pay extra to keep the conventional line, defeats the purpose of switching to Naked.

My $800 mobile did nothing when we had no power for 6 days...

I was lucky I had a car charger and could sit in the running car for an hour to get a bit of charge but many did not...

I now have a solar panel, a car charger, and a gyro lamp that I can also charge a mobile from...

but that is not going to be good for everyone...

$800 smart phone? Yes I could see why that would not last.

Expense is not an idicator of reliability.

facepalm.
