NSW Govt Offers Fluoridation Sweetener

The NSW government is offering a $7.5 million incentive that it hopes will persuade recalcitrant councils to fluoridate their drinking water.

But Health Minister Jillian Skinner says the government won't be supporting a Labor bill that would give state authorities power to force local councils to put the tooth-strengthening chemical in their drinking water.

Last week, Lismore Council overturned a ban on fluoride after seven years of lobbying by local health professionals.

However, there are still 15 council areas across the state that don't fluoridate their water, the government says.

Ms Skinner says the funds are aimed at encouraging those councils to reverse their decision.

The government wanted to support councils in making their own decisions, rather than take a big stick approach.

"It is for this reason we are boosting our infrastructure support for councils who have avoided fluoridation, to encourage them to deliver this vital service to the community," Ms Skinner said.

Councils can currently choose not to add the dental health booster to their water supplies, with several recent attempts by councils to block fluoridation.

A bill introduced into NSW parliament this month by opposition health spokesman Andrew McDonald would give the government power to mandate fluoridation in council public water supplies.

Ms Skinner on Wednesday said the government wouldn't support the proposed legislation.

"Recent outcomes have shown that with education and information, local councils are able to make informed decisions about fluoridation," she said in a statement.

Why are they so desperate to put fluoride in the drinking water?

Re: NSW Govt Offers Fluoridation Sweetener

Did you miss this posted above, as good reasons why they, them, us want to fluoridate the water supply?

Young children from parts of northern NSW without fluoridated water are being hospitalised for mass extractions of rotten teeth at nearly twice the rate of other children.

Dentists and paediatricians in Lismore and Ballina say tooth decay among young children is at Third-World levels.

The situation has prompted the Australian Dental Association to urge the federal government to use its influence to force councils swayed by ''fringe groups who peddle fear โ€ฆ and conspiracy theories'' to embrace water fluoridation.

Re: NSW Govt Offers Fluoridation Sweetener

yeah yeah yeah I get all that, am.

But why the governments fervour about our kid's dental health?

I mean, they're quite happy for companies to market their sugar-laden products to our kids en masse. No concerns about our kid's dental health there.

No worries about preservatives in the food causing as yet unkown health and allergy problems.

Not overly concerned about the effects of pollution or deforestation or overfishing or steroids fed to our beef pork and poultry.

Half-heartedly worried about the effects of alcohol or drugs on the unborn children of addicts or the effects of gambling on families.

No. Must have fluoride in the drinking water as if it were some kind of cure-all. Never mind about the side-effects, National Health can take care of that,

Doctors and Dentists have to make a living too, you know.

Oh and with regards to comparing some of our kids teeth to 3rd world countries.

From what I've seen, they have some pretty lovely white teeth in their smiles over in those 3rd world countries.

TS: "Blackmail? Same with vaccinations....don't have your child fully vaccinated and you miss out on the school payment? If it's the right thing to do why offer money?"

Actually TS it is not blackmail, I suggest you  check a dictionary.. Why do it?,  because as the CDC has said, and  also endorsed by the Australian Dental Association:-

"For 65 years, community water fluoridation has been a safe and healthy way to effectively prevent tooth decay. CDC has recognized water fluoridation as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century."

As opposed to nuts with no clinical expertise in dentistry (or medicine (vaccinations) ) who spout unsupported/unresearched nonsense on chat-boards.

1) How is fluoridating the water supply going to help dentists make a living?

2) Can you provide statistics on the number of people admitted to  hosptial in Australia over the last  five years suffering from fluoride poisoning?

IF: "you have clinical expertise in dentistry and vaccinations do you, Monno?"

No IF, but the CDC, WHO, Australian Medical, and Dental association, and numerous  other professional medical bodies world wide  do, and I take the time to research their findings apropos the topic(s) in debate.

I am always willing to read research/papers from any reputable  peer review body, but over time  I  seem to read inputs here from the same "anti" nuts, with no professional underwriting.

From my  past:comments,   (unanswered๐Ÿ˜ž

Is the Australian Dental Association  advocating an unsafe practice?
How about you IF, and our resident anti TS,   provide some credible studies published by accepted review organisations?,  or better still anything from the ADA that would disagree with their current  published statement, on a topic studied for 100 years and implemented  in domestic water supplies for  over 60 years:

Why would our own ADA publish:
"Water fluoridation is the single most effective public health measure for reducing dental caries across the population"

Why would the CDC publish: " CDC has recognized the fluoridation of drinking water to prevent dental decay as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

Why would  The WHO Oral Health Programme, jointly with the FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) and the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), have embarked on an action plan for the promotion of using fluoride, particularly focusing on the disadvantaged and under-served population groups.?

But why the governments fervour about our kid's dental health?

Because in recent years children's dental health has got worse (especially in areas with no fluoride in the water supply or the assumption that increased drinking of bottled water is one cause).

As for third world childre and/or children from developing countries having white shiny teeth:

Childrens teeth will decay with the increasing amount of sugar and lack of nutritional value in our fast-food diet.

Fluoride in drinking water is no antidote against bad dietary and dental hygiene habits.

Your vietnamese (3rd world) child. Do you happen to know what his/her diet and lifestyle is? Coca Cola and Nestle and other huge American food companies are finding a huge market in Asia, I hear.

Do very very poor people in third world countries have disposable income to spend on sweets and fizzy drinks?

I wonder if there may be a rise in the Councils relunctant to add the fluoride if this money is offered as a reward for those who don't want to comply ?
