NSW Set To Introduce Cash For Containers

A drinks container deposit scheme is to be introduced in NSW within the next few weeks as part of a plan to clean up the state's beaches and parks.

The details of the cash for containers scheme are still being finalised but it is likely to feature a rebate of 10 cents per item.

The NSW Government has been negotiating with the drinks industry to introduce the system and Environment Minister Rob Stokes said similar initiatives had proved highly successful in reducing waste in public spaces around the world.

"The beverage industry obviously has a responsibility in terms of the extent of producer liability for their products," Mr Stokes said.

"But we recognise that Government has a strong leadership role to play," he said.

"What we are interested in doing is working together effectively to produce solutions to a shared problem, which is litter and waste in our environment."

Re: NSW Set To Introduce Cash For Containers

If towns had them, I'd use them coming out of the bush. I don't drink canned grog, just soft drink and since

I don't burn cans, I bring all my rubbish out in bags and off load it in a dumpster near home - or at home.

IF I knew they had these collection points, I'd separate the cans for sure.

That name sounded familiar, Richo, so I typed it into the search engine.

Somehow I don't think this is the same band

Yes, but if the S crowd looked at the images on the facebook page first you run the risk of it being a B ball with no S's present  :D:D

My brother taught at a one teacher school a ways out of Gilgandra.

B&S Balls during the '60s were a hoot.

Re: NSW Set To Introduce Cash For Containers

I understand what they are trying to do with this proposal and it is certainly admirable. For my own personal perspective though it sucks.

I already recycle all cans, bottle and plastics that I can. I pay for this collection in my council rates. If I am out somewhere where there are no recycling bins I take my stuff home to put in my yellow bin.
Now it seems, if I want to recoup the extra that I'm going to inevitably pay for these products, I'm going to have to pack them up and take them somewhere to get my 10c, or whatever, back. Will my council reduce the kerb side recyclable collections because of the reduction in can and bottles being collected? Seems to me I'm going to lose out every which way.
