Naplan - how hard is this?

I have been trying to help my daughter plan and study for Year 7 Naplan and I give up!

The reading task is so complicated and the maths is impossible for me. The latter I can understand as maths isn't my strong point but reading and comprehension is something I have always been good at.

I can only suggest that my daughter (who has a learning difficulty) do what she can but I suspect most of her pages will be blank!

Anyone elses kids doing Year 7 Naplan at the moment?

Sorry - I have mislead you. It isn;t the equivelent of the HSC in Year 7. But It FEELS like that to the kids and they all seem to be treating it as seriously as something as the HSC.

I could have pulled my daughter out (and had I know how stressed she would be, I would have) but didn't because I have always told her that she should give everything a go no matter what.

The stress isn't due to the school. It is more peer discussion and she is reflecting the panic that her friends are feeling.

Naplan is a reflection on how well the school is educating it's students.

I firmly believe every student should do the test.....not just the advanced students..... it might help bring in extra resources, funding,

teachers aids.

Yes I agree.

I think a national test is important to see where gaps are and what schools need resources.

And for my daughter it means I have another way of testing how chronic her learning disability is by comparison.

But on saying that, the tests are way too difficult for 12/13 year old children IMO. And because parents take them so seriously, this causes an enormous strain on kids that they just don't need at that age.

Your kids would have to be the only kids in Australia who "love" doing Naplan.

Yes test them on what they are learning but these tests are not related to what they have been learning in the classroom. (Thats why it stresses kids)  It's more about "trying" to determine how well the school is educating the children.

The students should be learning these things in the classrooms......that's why they go to school.

I think what Daydream means is that they are more general tests not related to subjects. A bit like an IQ test.

Re: Naplan - how hard is this?

I notice no-one has had a go so I will.

all it's asking is list the numbers in order small to large.

so, first, break down what each number is:

8.2 is self explanatory
(8 x 2) is 16
8 squared is 64
82 is self explanatory.

so, it's
8.2, 16, 64, 82

the 4th answer is correct.

I wouldn't say my kids 'loved' doing Naplan, but they weren't bothered by the tests and did well in them.

Not every child in the class is going to do any test/assignment at the same level as everyone else in the class though.

I did the Naplan test in the link I posted above (from an online newspaper, correct answer is shown after you make choice). I didn't spend much time on it and got 6/10. That doesn't prove anything though as I had no problem learning at high school and beyond.

Did they really need to use that poem with the 'olden days' words in it?

Re: Naplan - how hard is this?

I think that if they really want to see how the school and curriculum is working and how the pupils are learning is to make it like a pop test with no prior warning.

What is the point of it if everyone knows ahead and can study for it, stress over it and stay home if it was thought that they wouldn't do well.

Re: Naplan - how hard is this?

What some posters seem to have missed, is that Martinis daughter has a learning disability and struggles with tests. NAPLAN is the weirdest test anyone invented. For some children it's fun, for others it is nerve wrecking.

Martini, take the letter that donna posted, c& p into Word, then print it out and give to your daughter. Perhaps print a few so your daughter can share with friends. It may take the stress out of those children, or at least ease it a bit so they do not feel so much under pressure.

I used to love School and learned easy. My older brother had learning problems and hated School.

I can understand the differences.

yes they are.  of course they are related to

what they have been learning at school.

what stresses the kids is all the negative

feedback from parents worrying about the

school performance results being made

public.

I agree. No point at all.

the only difference between naplan and other basic

skills tests for literacy and numeracy is that the

results are made public.

why shouln't students be given the opportunity

to prepare as they do with any other test ???

Not in primary school Julia.  Most tests are pop tests with no prior warning.
