Navy rescues 2 French yachtsmen in rough seas.

So we can manage to find 2 lone yachtsman in rough seas without any problem. In fact the resue goes extremelt "smoothly". We did it by deploying the Royal Australian Navy and a Navy Seahawk. And all this occurs at night using night vision capability. In rough seas.

Yet we can't find a boat full of 80 people who have given us their GPS location?

If only they were French hey?

INAM: "So we can manage to find 2 lone yachtsman in rough seas without any problem. In fact the resue goes extremelt "smoothly". We did it by deploying the Royal Australian Navy and a Navy Seahawk. And all this occurs at night using night vision capability. In rough seas.

Firstly INAM,  yachtsman have a minimum of 2 marine distress beacons which allow , once activated, a continuous position to be obtained by the GPS satellites and relayed to the appropriate rescue coordination centre.  The continuous  position information is more than sufficient  for the beacon/vessel to be located,  but it can also be used to home-in  on.

Next we come up against sovereign borders  SAR areas of responsibility and the sensitivity of Indonesia to incursions into their "waters" This requires initially coordination and  then  government approval,  all requiring precious time.

From what little I have read,  the boat/wreckage was eventually located 45 NM distant from the  telephoned geographical coordinates, mainly because of the time  elapsed before arrival at the initial reported position and the alleged  fact that sea conditions, wind, and drift tables were not employed by those who commenced the first sweep search.

I'd be curious to know a couple of 'facts'. How accurate was the supposed GPS location given on the previous occasion? How far away from the vessel was the rescue craft, and how far may the other craft have drifted in that time, thereby making the given location even less accurate?

In contrast to the information given by MM above, on how well prepared vessels carry reliable life saving, location determining equipment.

Yes, I have an opinion. No you don't have to agree with it. Yes I do have a right to it.

" well prepared vessels carry reliable life saving, location determining equipment."

CW,  it does not have to be a well prepared vessel,  just one with an off the shelf  EPIRB which costs $200 ish, and once activated will in most cases ensure being located. Tony Bullimore is a good example , after his boat capsized in the Southern Ocean he was located 1,400 miles off the Australian coast.

As for your other questions they have been answered adequately in a recent government briefing with a full time-line.
