New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Our new 'pup' (10 months) arrived a week ago and is settling in well. She seems happy and has stopped pining for her old family although every now and then there is a bit of wimpering if she can't see where we are.

She is drinking water but she isn't eating. The only thing we have managed to get into her is small bits of BBQ chicken skin (vets idea). That is in 7 days!

We called the breeder and apparently her companion (another female her age) also stopped eating but was back on her food by day 4.

Is there anything I can do?

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

martini I can understand why you think some of my criticism is unjustified. But you see, I wonder if you secretly enjoy the controversy. It seems sometimes you omit certain information which would change the meaning of your posts.

For example: When you said your dog dug a hole today. You didn't mention it had a purpose for digging the hole and something to keep it occupied. Nothing much beats a big meaty bone for chewing on and burying. That changes the whole perspective.

You are right. I've never owned a Basset. I wouldn't know how drooly and smelly or difficult to walk they are. But I know dogs and their needs. You say dogs may have evolved out of their pack mentality. And you know this because?  Woman LOL  However, its good to know you are spending some time with the dog, I guess a few pats are better than nothing. Maybe Bassets don't need walks or a pack to sleep with or play time ... do they really just sit there and drool?

I can't assume you are doing what is best for your dog. It's not a personal thing. I don't assume anyone is doing the best for their animals. I don't trust human's one little bit when it comes to animals. I know I'm a little 'over the top' when it comes to this subject. It's why I don't read the newspaper except for the first page or two and why I briefly scan over the headlines on the internet because if I come across an article on animal cruelty I cant literally sleep for weeks and sometimes months.

And last post from me tonight  is about the fuss about az's comment -

Her comment applied to one poster in particular. That poster put their 2 cents worth of criticism in (just because that's the way they operate) and hasn't been back since. So az was correct - the post was not about the pup but a general cause-trouble type of post. And it worked cause 4-5 pages later, 'you/we' all stopped talking about my dogs eating disorder and argued over nothing lol.

So apologies to bushie, julia and all those americans (who's names I mix up) for thinking the comments were aimed at them. Not so.

If you are referring to me (my 2c worth) you are mistaken martini. I did come back and apologise for my 'high horse' comments. I haven't been back until now because I had a visitor. Woman LOL

If speaking out for animal rights is 'trouble making' then so be it.  I've never heard of it labeled that before .. oh hang on, I have. Duck shooters of Australia get pretty peeved when people stand up for the rights of birds and ducks to live peacefully without being shot at.

However, I will not apologise for questioning your motives for having an outdoor dog. You'll let the dog in in the morning? While you are all busy getting ready for the day? Umm .. I don't see the dog getting a whole lot of attention in the morning. You won't be walking it. It all seems way too hard already to take it out for a walk. Yep the dog dug a hole. Be ready for more holes. It's what dogs do when they are bored. Then you'll let the dog in after work? What about during dinner? Will you allow the dog to sit under the table and bother you for food? I doubt it.  Personally I see the dog relegated to the backyard for the majority of it's life once the novelty wears off. According to you the dog drools and smells bad. Are you going to want the dog in the house when it's just so much easier leaving it outside. But don't post about the dog howling and barking, chewing your furniture and digging up your garden in a few months time. Unless you want me to come back and post my opinion.

BTW I have an opinion as do you. Deal with it 🙂

For my 2 cents, I think it's great you voice your opinion so vehemently toward animal rights, the animals dont have a voice so it's good they now have groups set up to help with the rehousing of unwanted pets etc.

I dont however, see one cruel intention in any of the above (actual thread related posts) I do understand that the road to hell can sometimes be paved by good intentions but honestly ,cruel is spray painting a dog yellow or something horrible like that or worse.   (As I heard happened to someones dog the other day...)  or as another poster said earlier different breeds, different needs.  One question though? How could you possibly know when Martini will or wont be walking her new dog?

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

When someone says walking the dog will be very difficult then it stands to reason eventually it will be easier not to walk the dog and to justify it by saying (as martini has already) their backyard is big enough for the dog to 'exercise'.

PS Thanks for acknowledging my right to stand up for animal rights 🙂

Re: New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Cat - I think part of the problem is that you know your cat habits better than you know your dog habits.

And as for omitting information - well I am wondering why the heck I need to explain every minutiae of every comment I make?

Did I really have to say any more than my neighbour saw my dog enjoying herself as she dug a hole today?? Seriously ??

And dogs don't dig because they are bored. Oh sure some do. But generally dogs dig for a multitude of reasons. Sometimes they dig because it smells good. Sometimes they dig because it's fun. Sometimes they dig because they are burying something. Or digging up something. I expect that the bone we gave her this morning will be moved around half a dozen times this week until she finds just the right spot for it.

But I am wondering what you EXPECT? That every animal owner should spend 24/7 hours a day with their pet and if they don't then, OMG!, it's animal "cruelty"? And not just 24/7 but the entire 24 hours should be given over to 100% attention focused on their pet huh? No more work for pet owners, no more social life for pet owners, no more showers for pet owners because even that will take you away from your pet for 15mins.

Give me a break. Smiley Frustrated

(And yes they do just sit there and drool. And if they aren't doing that, then they sleep. And that about sums up a basset.)

I could have sworn I said that she will be walked whether she likes it or not...Where did I say she will "not" be walked? In fact I have said the opposite.

But you seem to be missing a lot of what I am saying (talk about ommitting...) and reading things between the lines that do not exist.

I am also failing to fathom how a thread started because I was concerned about my pup and was looking for helpful advice can turn me into the pet owner monster from hell whose cruelty seems to know no bounds lol...

She will get a walk at night. But again, she IS a basset. So walking her is a struggle. And so far she has refused to leave the driveway. Bassets are notoriously bad walkers and give up easily - I have a lifetime of experience in picking up 40 kilo dogs to carry them home because they refuse to move on a walk. However, she does have 1200m2 of land to roam in at home.

So she hasn't actually been for a walk then has she. Ooops.

Anyway thats my last post.. for tonight 🙂

Hmm. Well that's a shame as I would have liked to have heard about that elusive perfect pet owner that you expect all humans to be...
