New dog not eating. Suggestions?

Our new 'pup' (10 months) arrived a week ago and is settling in well. She seems happy and has stopped pining for her old family although every now and then there is a bit of wimpering if she can't see where we are.

She is drinking water but she isn't eating. The only thing we have managed to get into her is small bits of BBQ chicken skin (vets idea). That is in 7 days!

We called the breeder and apparently her companion (another female her age) also stopped eating but was back on her food by day 4.

Is there anything I can do?

Yes, that is exactly what I was referring to Martini. It was all too obvious to me.

ok.  obvious to you but not "we all know".

How about I send my posts to you to edit before I post them?

i think a simple clarification would be more than

sufficient.  we all make mistakes.

Martini, It was just a long shot thought.

Some dogs have an extended uvula and when they breathe this rubs and becomes sore.

Hence they can lose appetitie as it hurts to eat.

It's like a pendulum and can get stuck on the wrong side as well causing the dog to cough.

A small procedure can have it reduced so it doesn't rub.

Dogs with this condition tend to snore more than usual.

But glad to hear pup is eating. Smiley Happy

Can't have been me, this is my first post here,

And I came in to say from past observations of martini and her many posts, I can't imagine any animal in her care ever being tossed aside or neglected, infact such an opinion is ridiculous.

As to inside/outside - if a dog is happy, then that is how it should be. I have 2 dogs- Miniature Scnauzer who is a complete inside sook, and a huge Golden Lab, who destroys everything with is swinging kangaroo tail, and rushes back outside as soon as he can.

I would, frankly, leave it to martini as to how she raises her new addition - pretty sure she can handle it!

Morning GC.

I have the most wonderful standard Schnauzer - Maxine - Maxi for short - ( had to give her something butch with a beard & moustache ).

She is now 15 & I do not want to go there.

Reading all this 'to & fro' ain't exactly helping the pup.

Could be a few things - which is why I would have her/him checked by a good vet.

Apart from the obvious de-attachment yearnings, teeth, ears, etc come to mind.

Is the pup scratching any area in particular - check for yeast.

Mine had the best bath yesterday - likes the shower.

Have a good one. ALL.

Clarification for nit pickers................ we all.................. is obviously the 2 posters, Martini and myself. Might it occur to you that only those posters had posted prior to my post being written?

I'm an animal lover.

I'm really happy to hear that the dog is eating! She is adapting to her new home. Obviously you care about the dog, Martini... or you would not have started the thread.

My dog has a doggy door. She comes and goes as she pleases. I also take her for an hour long walk every day, and a daily car ride up to the barn, so she can vistit her buddy there.

I do understand that many dogs do prefer to be outside.

Maybe I was quick to judge when I saw the word "OUTSIDE" dog. I envisioned a dog sitting outside day and night, with food thrown at it once or twice a day. I've known dogs who live like that, and it makes me sad. Now that I've read more about your new dog, I understand that will not be the situation at your home.

Enjoy your new family member. Heart

Also,

Artful and I are not the one and the same. We do agree about animal care.

I don't recall having a conversation(or debate) about animal care with anybody on this board in the past.

It's probably not correct, but I call my dog a "who", not an it or that. Cat Very Happy

I am sure Martini's dog will be ok once it has settled in with the family, positive it is getting the best care.

My 2 dogs are "outside" dogs, I will not have them in during the day and I do not allow them to wander willy nilly thru the house,  they come in of an evening while we watch telly but really they don't like being indoors and the male after an hour max wants to go back outside, the female will stay in a couple hours but then she's had enough and wants to go outside, they are border collies, they have their own bed right near the back door and that's what they want..

I am sure we all know what our own dogs like and dislike and treat them accordingly, some like their dogs on their beds for instance, I don't but each to their own, as long as we treat our dogs properly and they are part of the family however they choose to be then that is all that matters.
