Nice to see a woman coming out on top for once

After the discussion re the murder of the 17 year old Masa Vukotic while walking in Doncaster,

it's nice to see a better ending for a similar situation.

What caught my attention, apart from the self defence aspect, was it sounds like someone taught her where to kick as well

- the kidneys (and liver area). Worth taking note again as they are the two unprotected vital organs available to easily inflict hurt (three if you count both kidneys).

Anyway, good on her for not being a worse victim. I hope she ruptured his kidneys.

A woman who was left with a broken nose after she was attacked on the street while walking her dog said she doesn't believe she would have been able to fight off her violent assailant had she not learned self-defence.

Clare Verrall, 31, was out with her french bulldog Dutchy on Wednesday evening near her home in Prahran, in Melbourne, when a man jumped out at her from behind some bins.

He attacked her and she was left with a black eye, broken nose and broken toe from the altercation. During the fight she kneed the man in the groin and kicked him before she fled.

'I was walking my dog about two streets down for where I live, and itโ€™s on the way to the dog park I go to every day,' Ms Verrall told Daily Mail Australia.

This guy stepped out from this apartment complex and it just happened really quickly... He just grabbed me and threw me back against the wall,' she continued.

The attacker then threatened her life, saying 'something along the lines of "make a noise or scream and Iโ€™ll kill you".'

'It all happened so quickly and I just kneed him straight in the nuts,' Ms Verrall revealed.

'He went down and he was sort of groaning and cursing me and calling me the c-word so I just kicked him as hard as I could twice in the kidneys.'

'They can try to beat you, they can try to intimidate you, they can try to make you feel like youโ€™re nothing but women, we are all something,' Ms Verall, who is sporting a painful-looking black eye in the footage, said.

The 31-year-old continues her monologue saying she was 'blessed' to have been able to do kickboxing and self-defence classes as it meant she was able to defend herself.

'... I had the opportunity to use those skills and I kneed my assailant in his groin, very hard, he hit the ground very hard, and I then kicked him twice while he was down and then I grabbed my dog and I ran,' she revealed.

Ms Verrall said she believes the only reason she was able to get out of that situation is because of her training.

I love the way she said 'I fought back' in the video with that fiesty edge in her voice. Now she's speaking out, encouraging women to learn self defense. Good for her!

Awesome story.

Thanks for posting this.

I note especially this:

Responding to a question, Ms Verrall states:

'Will I be more cautious? Yes.'

I think it would be nicer if male persons stopped attacking women so they don't have to fight off attackers.

Jack Reacher reccommends kicking 'em in the goolies for quick incapacitation as well.

That is OK when you are facing the assailant, but what if he grabs you from behind and pins your arms down or tries to stick a gag into your mouth?

I learned self-defence when I was young. Still know a few ways to defend myself, but knowing and being able to execute such moves leaves me wondering. At nearly 80 years of age, with arthritic hands, spinal problems and a gummy hip, could I still defend myself successfully?

I certainly would try, and if it was only a hard kick against his shin and a try to poke his eyes. And even with crippled hands, I would try to give a sideways chop against his neck.

Oh, and my fingernails would leave some deep marks.

I do wonder if it was some one that was not as pretty if there would be so many photos.

I have good strong finger nails and would at least get his DNA under them, I would also scratch his eyes out and grab him by the balls and rip them out if I could.

I can say all that but some times fear makes you paralysed

Like many others, I'm really glad he got a little of what he deserved - and she was able to escape, relatively unharmed.

Yes, the physical injuries will heal quickly enough, but not the psychological scars she could have received, if she hadn't fought back.

I've trained my wife and daughters to stand up for themselves - and my daughters have used these skills on a number of ocassions now - due to unwanted advances and now long-gone partners..

As a man, I was brought up to respect and treat women, and in 60-odd years, have never raised more than my voice to any woman.

And I'm still not too old to want to spend 5 minutes in a locked room with scum like this one - and teach him the error of his ways!

Propably not as many photos, Lion, but I think older people are just as much a target as the young women and children. Especially on pension days I would never venture out with to much cash. Each is in danger for different reasons.

Our laws need changing to harsher penalties, and no excuses for disturbed childhoods or temporary mental impairment because of drugs or alcohol.

Lind I agree, I have been really taken back at the attacks on older people in NZ recently.

It has made me more aware of my surroundings.
