Not buying it !.McCann developments.Wendy Murphy

Investigators are hoping that new information will help solve the mystery of what happened to Madeleine McCann.

The then- three-year-old British girl disappeared six years ago while vacationing with her family in Portugal.

Scotland Yard is planning to release a computerized sketch of a possible person of interest in the case.

Former prosecutor Wendy Murphy joined America’s News Headquarters to discuss the development.

"I’m not buying it. I think this is more PR than anything," Murphy said. "I think this is all related to a civil suit now underway in Portugal."

The McCanns sued the former police chief for defamation because he wrote a tell-all book.

Alisyn pointed out that the McCanns claim the Portuguese police never took the case seriously

Chuk , imo Scotland Yard are ignoring the important bits for some reason.

They seem to making up timelines and disregarding the one's that the so named tapas 9 have made and signed.

Scotland Yard are not making up timelines,as has been explained several times in this thread and in media/police reports. They adjusted/extended the timeline by 45mins

The significance of that 9.15pm sighting being ruled out meant Maddie was possibly still safe up until 10pm when she was discovered missing. The movement in the timeline was significant for police as it widened the time when she disappeared.

Inspector Redwood said he was now attaching more weight to the sighting of the man and the child on a street at 10pm, which was later than was previously believed. Mother Kate raised the alarm of Madeleine's disappearance at 10pm.

Portuguese authorities closed their investigation in 2008, but Britain's Scotland Yard police headquarters spent two years reviewing the evidence at the British government's request and opened their own probe in July this year.

I think the idea that the McCanns killed their daughter, and then sat in the restaurant as if nothing happened, is just totally ridiculous.

its not so far fetched - ever heard of casey anthony, darle routier, susan smith to name just three on a long list who have murdered their children and carried on their lives...

The significant word here is 'murdered.'  Nobody has ever suggested that Gerry McCann murdered his daughter. The suggestion is that having gone to check on the kids and finding her dead,   he picks her up and  walks round the apartment with her,  putting her down and picking her up again in all the spots where the sniffer dog detected' death, then hides the body,(maybe dropping it out of the window if the sniffer dog got it right)  walks out of the appartment, has a perfectly normal conversation with someone, then walks back to the restaurant to continue to eating and chatting with his friends as if nothing has happened?

If this child isn't alive.....other children should be focused on

If your child went missing and was never found dead or alive, in at least 6 years.. would you just give up and say she must be dead lets not look into it any further,  tell the police don't try and find the offender (maybe that person could abduct another innocent child if not caught)??????????????????

not very often missing children have the Govt spend that much on them.

further back there is a call for the British Gov to help find a child who went missing in Kos in 1991..the same way they are helping the McCanns ...this family feel they have beenn ignored

The McCann's have their own funds given by tax payers as well

have the Govt spend that much on them.

how much is that then? What is the $$ figure. Scotland Yard has not been investigating this case for 6 years.

The McCanns hired private investigators after the Portugese police closed the case after 12 mths.

Unless you have studied every missing child investigation in the UK for the last 20 or so years, how do you know if more or less was spent on this investigation.

If individuals are donating some of their net income (which has already had tax deducted by their Govt) good for them, they are not donating as taxpayers they are donating as citizens. The citizens aren't paying tax twice. They are voluntarily giving some of thier income to help find Maddie.

Why would either parent murder their child.. is this based on child abuse theories?

Re: Not buying it !.McCann developments.Wendy Murphy

I see, people are going with this theory.

Yet, to the exasperation and dismay of the McCanns, Goncalo Amaral stubbornly sticks to his outlandish thesis. His book suggests – without, the McCanns argue, a shred of justification – that Madeleine woke up while her parents were having supper, having been stirred either by her father checking her at 9.05pm or, minutes later, talking to another holidaymaker in the street outside the bedroom window.

At the sound of her father’s voice, Madeleine got out of bed, and in a dreadful accident, fell behind the sofa in the living room of the apartment and was killed.

Amaral says: ‘I think someone discovered the body, concealed it, cleaned everything up, and moved the sofa.’

At the Lisbon hearing, police colleagues have given collaborating evidence. One, retired officer Francisco Moita Flores, criticised the Scotland Yard investigation for assuming Madeleine had been kidnapped.

No doubt Portuguese detectives such as him, who support Amaral’s theory, would question why the Yard and Crimewatch are putting such extensive resources into the hunt for Madeleine, six and a half years after she vanished.

Re: Not buying it !.McCann developments.Wendy Murphy

Scotland Yard’s review of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is on course to cost £2million in its first year.

The team of 30 murder squad detectives has racked up a significant bill since Prime Minister David Cameron called in the force last May.

They have made at least four trips to Portugal and Spain to gather evidence, including a file of leads from private investigators.

The Metropolitan Police has already sent the Home Office a bill for £800,000 but the figure is expected to rise to £1.9million by the end of next month.

The cost includes the salaries of the detectives, translation and interpretation fees, travel expenses and office staff.

Senior figures warned the inquiry, called Operation Grange, could take years to complete and played down any hopes of a significant breakthrough.

When the review was announced it sparked a row over the use of public funds as the Government was accused of interfering with police operations.

Compared to ?

How did you get from 1.9mGBP to another 5mGBP in a 1 yr & 10 mths?

Just as well the  British Govt isn't cruel and heartless and refuses to fund such an investigation isn't it?

An MP is backing calls for the case of missing Ben Needham to get the same support as that given to the family of Madeleine McCann.

Labour's Angela Smith says she will ask the Government to help the Sheffield family in the same way that they have backed Kate and Gerry McCann , whose daughter went missing in Portugal six years ago.

Ben's grandfather has told Calendar that they've been "forgotten," and ignored by successive Governments after the toddler went missing in 1991 on Kos.

This week a TV reconstruction of Madeleine's disappearance was shown, following a two-year, five million pound investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Mark Witty reports
