Investigators are hoping that new information will help solve the mystery of what happened to Madeleine McCann.
The then- three-year-old British girl disappeared six years ago while vacationing with her family in Portugal.
Scotland Yard is planning to release a computerized sketch of a possible person of interest in the case.
Former prosecutor Wendy Murphy joined America’s News Headquarters to discuss the development.
"I’m not buying it. I think this is more PR than anything," Murphy said. "I think this is all related to a civil suit now underway in Portugal."
The McCanns sued the former police chief for defamation because he wrote a tell-all book.
Alisyn pointed out that the McCanns claim the Portuguese police never took the case seriously

TGSE, I know that the Police had the Smith statements .They have been online, along with the other statements (which you,me or anyone can read ) since 2008
So what point we .ere you trying to make in the following exchange
****************************************************************************************************************************************
IZA: She El, If they knew it wasn't Gerry why would they not at least follow the leads that their PI's came up with in order to find Maddie ?
TGSE: Because it was information that was already in the hands of the police
IZA: the information has only recently been in the hands of SY .Once and for all being able to rule out the earlier sighting by JT
****************************************************************************************************************************************
The reason the man Jane Tanner saw was ruled out was because the police finally tracked down and eliminatd the man concerned, not because they recently came into information about the later sighting.
Since 2007 the police had been in possession of BOTH set of statements from the Smiths - the one given at the time to Portugues Police and the later one given to British Police saying Martin Smith believed the man he saw was Gerry.
So my original argument still stands - since the McCanns knew the police were aware of the later ighting, and if they knew that contrary to Martin Smith's opinion, the man seen by him could not possibly have been Gerry, then there was a very sound and innocent reason for them not wanting that statement made public.

The anti-McCann theorist's have their own theories about Jane Tanner which have been published and spread widely through blogs. Are those theories and doubt about Jane Tanner still valid today, now that the police have established the identity of the man she saw who was carrying a female child at approx 9.15pm?
Undated link, not recent.
WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO MADELEINE MCCANN?
60 reasons which suggest that she was not abducted
By Tony Bennett M.A.
.....That Ms Jane Tanner (partner of Dr Russell O’Brien), saw a man walking ‘purposefully’, with a child in his arms, along the top of the road running alongside the McCanns’ apartment (we will come to the reliability of Ms Tanner’s observations later). She initially said the man had been walking in the opposite direction. She has stuck to her account that she saw this man at almost exactly 9.15pm.
....Going by the above scenario, which the McCanns and their ‘Tapas 9’ friends have maintained, the abductor (if there was one) must have either entered the apartment before Dr Matthew Oldfield’s check at around 9.03pm and Dr Gerry McCann’s check at 9.05pm/9.07pm - the version the McCanns now want us to believe - or after Dr Gerry McCann left at 9.09pm/9.10pm and before he was (allegedly) seen by Jane Tanner at 9.15pm.
...He must in addition have accomplished this whole operation in near total darkness and without being seen or heard by anyone - except for the highly suspect evidence of Jane Tanner, which we will deal with later.
....And if he entered the apartment after Dr Gerry McCann left at 9.10pm, he would scarcely have had time to enter the flat, remove Madeleine, open the window and shutters, close them behind him etc. and then be seen by Jane Tanner at 9.15pm.
....Contradictions between the account of Jeremy Wilkins and the accounts of Dr Gerry McCann and Jane Tanner
...Months after this description was issued - based solely on Jane Tanner’s statement to the police - Ms Tanner came up with a quite different description, now claiming, for example, that the man looked ‘swarthy’ and ‘Mediterranean’. We deal with that in more detail below. The reason, of course, why the police were reluctant to issue this description at the time, was because by then they had good grounds for suspecting that Jane Tanner’s claimed ‘sighting’ was fabricated, plus many other indications that the McCanns’ abduction claim was false. [speculation!]
Jane Tanner mentioned 49 times in total in this link.

The Investigators were being employeed and paid to Find Maddie.
Their own investigators had found reason not to give weight to their Friends earlier sighting and wanted that efit (which their investigaor did) released to help find maddie .To look for a man seen later ,more to the Smiths statement and efit.
Instead of doing so or passing it on to the Police in either Country (Portugal may have been able to reopen 5 years ago if they had) they used the publicly donated fund given to help find Maddie to silence the findings of The Funds Investigators .
That not only stated by Haligan in the Sunday Times article. earlier in this thread.
The fund paid Lawyers to do that rather than to actually follow leads which may find her.
They let their daughter down again...and the public down who gave to the Fund down. The Fund money was misused .

Rebekah Brooks accused of bullying Government over McCanns
Published: 11 May 2012
Rebekah Brooks was accused of bullying the Government into ordering a British police investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
QC Robert Jay claimed Mrs Brooks threatened to put Home Secretary Theresa May on the front page of The Sun every day until she ordered a new inquiry into the missing child.
But Mrs Brooks denied she had used threats and said her argument — and that of Maddy’s parents Kate and Gerry — had simply “persuaded” the Tory-led government soon after it took power.
She said: “I didn’t speak to No 10 or the Home Office about the McCanns until after the campaign had been won.”
Stormy metaphors swirl as phone-hacking scandal goes to trial
The phone-hacking saga has already wreaked chaos in Fleet Street, knocking down the 168-year-old News of the World, blowing lawyers through tabloid newsrooms like so much leaf litter, and (to put the metaphor on hold for a second) resulting in more than 100 arrests.
Now, two years after the Guardian's story on the hacking of Milly Dowler's mobile phone, this chill, destructive (or, in many eyes, long-needed and purging) gale has reached the core of News Corp.
It is the first trial triggered by the phone-hacking scandal, and is not expected to be the last. But it may be the most sensational.
Stepping out of a black cab and into the court's stone- and wood-panelled depths was Rebekah Brooks, suave and warm in her beige coat, seemingly unmoved by the push and pull of the stiff, surging breeze.
Trusted confidante of Rupert Murdoch, the ideal News product – brash, confident, a friend and scourge to prime ministers – Brooks is the key target for those who want to disprove the line that News has, with increasing difficulty, tried to maintain: that the news organisation was betrayed by "rogue journalists", rather than being corrupt at its core.
With Brooks in the dock, moored over a sea of wigs, is Andy Coulson: Brooks' deputy and then successor as NOTW editor, later recruited to head communications for David Cameron, a decision the prime minister must regret, oh, about every day or so.
Especially today. Everything seems at risk here, as the tightening lines of air pressure circle and build around this long trial.

Hi, I agree, I actually don't believe she is alive
but that doesn't mean her parents killed her, even accidently?
If it was the post I think it was, my query was related to where they could have hidden her body or disposed of it, in a foreign country, while being watched by police and media.
No, it doesnt, anything could have happened to her.
Ive always taken the McCanns as odd, and their behaviour after the fact odd. I dont think either of them admitted it was wrong to leave the children by themselves. they seem very narcissistic. it could be their behaviour was odd because of the guilt, but I didnt think they held much guilt about putting Maddie in the position where she was at risk. they didnt seem to think they had done anything wrong.

He was, but that doesn't make Jane Tanner's statement false or even suspicious. She said she saw a man carrying a child near the apartment d anat around 9.15 and events have provd that she she did indeed see a man carrying a child at that time.
I didnt say it was. I said I thought the person she saw was identified as a father picking his child up from a near by hotel that had a creche.

Madeleine McCann: Scotland Yard to aid search for missing girl after parents impassioned appeal
12 May 2011
Scotland Yard will "bring their expertise" to the search for missing Madeleine McCann, the Home Office said tonight.
..Mr McCann disclosed his frustration at the lack of progress since he and his wife first asked for a full cold case review in 2009.
"We really have come to the end of our tether. We want to see action from the Government, not rhetoric," he told a press conference in central London.
Mrs McCann, 43, added: "When you're in a position such as the Prime Minister, you have a responsibility. If you're not willing to work for a child, you have to ask, 'who are you working for'?"
Portuguese detectives helped by British officers from Leicestershire Police carried out a massive investigation into Madeleine's disappearance from her family's holiday flat in Praia da Luz in the Algarve on May 3 2007.
But the official inquiry was formally shelved in July 2008 and since then no police force has been actively looking for the missing child
Former home secretary Alan Johnson commissioned a scoping exercise by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (Ceop) centre to look at the feasibility of carrying out a review of the case.
This was completed in March last year, but Mr McCann said Mrs May refused to let him and his wife see it because it was "sensitive".
The McCanns, from Rothley, Leicestershire, have written an open letter to Mr Cameron asking for an "independent, transparent and comprehensive" review of all information about Madeleine's disappearance.
They said: "A key piece of the 'jigsaw' could easily have been overlooked and not joined up with another. We have tried in vain to get the authorities in the UK and Portugal to play their part.
"But, sadly, our requests have seemingly fallen on deaf ears. It is simply not acceptable that they have, to all intents and purposes, given up on Madeleine."
The couple hope that Mrs McCann's book, entitled simply Madeleine, will revive public support and boost their dwindling fund for private detectives to search for their daughter.
It was already a best-seller based on advance sales, having topped Amazon.co.uk's book chart for several days.
The 384-page book, which is dedicated to the McCanns' three children, Madeleine and six-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, includes intriguing insights into the couple's surreal existence in Portugal in the summer of 2007.
Mrs McCann discloses that Cherie Blair phoned her five days after Madeleine's disappearance and warned her: "Whatever happens, your life will never be the same again."
She also recounts the occasion in July 2007 when the late broadcaster Sir Clement Freud, who had a house in Praia da Luz, invited the McCanns around for lunch and broke the ice by offering them a strawberry vodka.

I wonder if they can't admit they are at fault? we do have a society that can't shoulder blame or guilt and plenty of people would be telling them it wasn't their fault?.
"look what you made me do" seems to be a common phrase.

That's right .A man recently came forward with his dd's pj's and posed for the police and explained that he is the person JT sighting ..The hotel with the creche was the same one which the McCann's were staying at.

there seems to be quite a bit of Politics in this ?
