OMG All This Water!

Coming out of our sky!

Our Goverment should invest in a pipeline to catch the rainwater from the Eastern Coastline to pipe it into the dry areas.

Not possible though is it?

We had a drought here (NSW) for about 5-8 years not that long ago, no water to pipe anywhere else.

NSW is not the only state in which it rains.

Qld and NT have huge amounts of rain which could be stored and piped into drought areas.

Re: OMG All This Water!

Not feasible. Perhaps the Duke of Edinburgh could redirect his 'funding' of his awards to a water pipeline from NT to WA?

Govt website

Key facts

  • Moving water long distances is costly, energy intensive, and can have significant environmental, social and cultural impacts.

  • Using water that is locally available is generally more cost effective than transporting water long distances. Current studies show that local options, such as water conservation, desalination and recycling, cost around $1–2 per thousand litres; a supply from 1500 kilometres (km) away would cost around $5–6 per thousand litres.5

  • Much of northern Australia can be described as ‘annually water limited’. This means that in general, more water is lost every year through evapotranspiration than falls as rain.6

  • Most rainfall in northern Australia falls near the coast, not in river headwaters, and runs off to the sea.

  • The landscape across much of the north is gently undulating and at a low elevation, presenting few opportunities for surface water storage such as dams.

There was no "funding" for the recent knighthood bestowed on the Duke by The Aus PM. I didn't cost Australia anyting.

But yes. I'd like to see some of the funding Australia sends overseas stay in Australia to help our own agriculture and manufacturing.

Re: OMG All This Water!

Yes, but you said the Duke of Edinburgh good works includes him personally funding the Duke of Edinburgh awards in Australia.Smiley Wink

I never said Abbott's decision to award the Knighthood cost Aust money.

I hope you don't think it was an original idea to pipe water from one end of Australia to another.

A range of studies, have investigated proposals to transport water from higher to lower rainfall areas. All these studies have concluded that proposals to transport water typically have very high economic, energy, social and environmental costs.

Alternatives to diverting water — what else can we do?

A secure, reliable water supply is vital for Australia’s social, economic and environmental wellbeing. Dam yields have declined over the past decade, and there is a risk of further declines in rainfall and runoff as a result of climate change. We must find new sources of water for urban supplies that are less dependent on climate.

To improve the reliability of water supplies, governments are implementing planning practices that consider the merits of the full range of supply and demand options. These include water recycling, desalination, urban rain and stormwater harvesting, and improving water use efficiency.

I don't think we should be messing with Mother Nature. She has a nasty habit of coming back and biting us on the bum when we do.

That concerns me in NZ, lurker, where they are now dairy farming in dry country in Canterbury, using constant irrigation to grow enough grass for the dairy cows.

Of course it is.  So is a desalination plant. But it can be done.

  • Using water that is locally available is generally more cost effective than transporting water long distances. Current studies show that local options, such as water conservation, desalination and recycling, cost around $1–2 per thousand litres; a supply from 1500 kilometres (km) away would cost around $5–6 per thousand litres.

It would be recouped by making the irrigated areas more productive. It could be used generate electricity like the Snowy River Hydrelectric Scheme. Better than those stupid windfarms.

  • Much of northern Australia can be described as ‘annually water limited’. This means that in general, more water is lost every year through evapotranspiration than falls as rain.

So you store it where it can't evaporate.

  • Most rainfall in northern Australia falls near the coast, not in river headwaters, and runs off to the sea.

So you catch it in coastal areas.

  • The landscape across much of the north is gently undulating and at a low elevation, presenting few opportunities for surface water storage such as dams.

So you store it underground. Like the artesian wells and bore water.

It can all be done. Yes it takes money. Same as the new airport at Badgery's Creek will, and our new North West Rail. The government should make the investment, it would pay off. Especially with all the employment it would create.

Knowing our stupid governments though, they would contract it all overseas.

Re: OMG All This Water!

And if you think we are such cretins, what are you doing on the Australian C S boards?

I guess reading comprehension is a little beyond you.............read my post again, perhaps moving your lips..........

I said those who advocate pipelines sound like the cretins who want Columbia River water for Southern California.  I can't imagine any state would be willing to deny their citizens water to pipe it into the never-never.

Re: OMG All This Water!

am*3 the period of drought in NSW was mainly West NSW,.  I remember many days when they were talking about the drought and I would be looking out my window in Sydney at the pouring rain.  If they had a way of capturing the water it could have been piped to West NSW to help the drought stricken areas.

I found this drought map which is interesting I picked December as a sample and checked from the beginning to the end. The worst years for almost total drought was 2002/2003 and then again in 2006,

What you actually said was:

Gawd............youse guys sound like those cretins in Southern California who want to build a pipeline from the Columbia River to Los Angeles, so they can keep their golf courses green and swimming pools full.

We don't appreciate being likened to cretins, thanks.
