Offensive number plate?

A Victorian man has had his personalised registration plates on his car cancelled after VicRoads deemed them offensive.

Peter Hansen from Portland has had the plates on his Torana for ten years without a problem, but they were suddenly recalled because they “reference violence”.

The plates spell out the word ‘weapon’ in four letters: ‘WEPN’.

The Torana has been a feature at dozens of legal drag races and is known among car lovers.

“I’ve been pulled over by the police to check out my vehicle and they’ve told me how nice of a car I’ve got, but there are never any hoon fines,” he said.

I didn't even know what WEPN meant thinking it was an acronym for something.

He seems to have a great car which he takes pride in and so he should.

I think this is just absurd.

Re: Offensive number plate?

I wonder why, after 10 years, VicRoads decided it was offensive. I see the guy is going to fight the decision - good on him. It would be great if some politician with a spine stood up for him and said enough is enough with this political correctness BS which has contaminated our lives. It has become ridiculous and it seems the little minds with a keyboard are deciding what is right and what is wrong. And our democracy buckles to them - how pathetic.

Re: Offensive number plate?

I've seen a couple of numberplates that someone might consider offensive.

I think they are clever (that the car owners got away with it).

WEPN seems rather tame to me.

I think if you're constantly on the lookout for offense, you'll be sure to find it.

Re: Offensive number plate?

Years ago I spoke to someone with an F100 truck.

His number plates were "FBIG". He had actually wanted "FNBIG" but was refused.

Re: Offensive number plate?

I would think it stood for Ford Big.

Wepn........................maybe the owner meant.........your weepn cause I left you in the dust.

Even if it was meant as weapon.............a little over the top to ban that one.

Re: Offensive number plate?

I was friends with a psychiatrist who had a sports car with the number plate FORFUN. He was pressured by his profession to get rid of it because it was unbecoming and inappropriate. I think they all needed therapy.
