Old Chinwag Craft Board Block Swap 2007

Sometime in early 2007, the Craft Board quilters got together and organised a Block Swap. We had to design and prepare enough blocks to make a quilt for ourselves, provide the first block completed and send the package on to the other crafty people in the swap.
We each completed a block in everyone's set.
My quilt was for my grandsons' bedroom in my home. I set a theme of teddy bears and boy's toys.
Most of these quilts have been finished for some time....... but.... I could not make a decision on how to do mine until recently.
I learned so much in that year and can't thank everyone who was involved enough! My applique skills are much improved.
So, thank you ♥

I have also sewn the labels of the blockmakers onto the back of the quilt, behind the relevant blocks.
I made mine into a quillow, a quilt that folds into a pillow, so one of the blocks is on the back of the quilt and when folded into it, becomes a pillow.
My 3 yo grandaughter looked at it and said "Gran, that is brilliant" and that is a good recommendation, so I have to thank everyone who was involved.

Re: Old Chinwag Craft Board Block Swap 2007

Well, I have finally figured out my binding/mitre/corners problem...
What a frustration though - I think there's only 4 places in my 'city' that sell quilting fabrics & all the associated gear... I went to 2 that were totally useless.
In one shop that lady seemed not to even have looked at my praccy piece or listen to me, just went straight to a rack & told me I needed this 'thing' for $30. Well I don't need it because I've mastered what the 'thing' is designed to help me with.
2nd shop, a young guy mid-20's, playing game on computer. When I stated my problem, he said "We have this" & proceeded to give me a schedule of their classes/lessons. Unbelieveable that a shop specialising in quilting/patchwork interests would not have a staff member that knows how to help!! gggrrrrrr...
So I finally ended up at Textile Traders (I believe they only operate in WA) & a customer got chatting to me, she was very helpful & even welcomed me to go to her quilting group. Pity it's 45 mins away from me. The staff member was great too. And she DIDN'T try to sell me anything.
Seems some places only want to help you if you buy something from them.

And there's a theory that "online" is having a detrimental effect on retail. Well, I think that with customer service like that, retail in itself has a lot of thinking to do...

LTS I do have one tip that may help you (if I have posted this before, please ignore both the post and the poster, LOL)

Get yourself a pair of long handled tweezers, they are excellent for holding one part down while you fold the other, and making sure your corners are pulled out right....hope that makes sense.

Re: Old Chinwag Craft Board Block Swap 2007

Good News, Friends!!
I have finally done fabulous mitred corners on my praccy piece of quilt... What an odyssey that was...

So yesterday I stitched the binding onto the quilted table runner I'm making, & I can see already that the corners will fold neatly, sit properly & stitch beautifully in place. I even joined the binding with a 45° seam, just the same way as joining the binding strips together!! I believe I am now a confirmed Visual Learner...
I am so pleased that I have taught myself these new sewing techniques, thus opening up wider variation in what sewing projects I might do in future. I was very determined not to give up & I thank you lovely ladies for your encouragement & support...
As I am not in a position to join a class or group in which to learn these things, I just need to be patient in teaching myself, & come back here when I need to. I have a couple of friends who quilt, so I can call on them for guidance too.

Tonight I will start hand stitching the binding in place. And when it's all done, I'll put up some pics.
LTS Happy♥

Re: Old Chinwag Craft Board Block Swap 2007

I have a question regarding quilt labels...

does anyone put them on their work?
do you make your own? do you label everything you make?
what to write/record on the label?

Re: Old Chinwag Craft Board Block Swap 2007

I always put a label on my quilts, usually the year it was made, the name of the recipient and my name. I used to embroider them....sometimes I still do that but I also buy them and write on the label.
My friend embroiders hers on the binding in the same colour, so not very noticeable.

that's interesting za - i'm just wondering, because I have made something for a particular occasion coming up & want to label it accordingly.

(ps I see there's a 'friendly' poster on another thread! what joy they bring...)
