Is anyone here affected by the Optus hack?
We are not, but my daughter received a communication from them to say her bank details & passport details & also licence details I think, had been stolen.
The annoying thing is she is not with Optus. She has not been with Optus for almost 6 years. Why, then, do they still have all her records on file? Very annoying.

Until about 3 years ago, my cousin worked for Norton and even he won't touch them.
So, laugh away. Do a defrag, that's really going to help stop hackers and scammers.

Easy.
I am diligent - it is common knowledge that to do - a clean disc - defrag - is keeping your PC - in order.
I didn't think I'd have to explain - this is not a part of security - simply making the computer function - better.
At no time did I try to convince anyone of anything - but stated that which I do - to not only make the computer run well but - update the protection - then scan.
I assumed - wrongly - this was a thread to share - tips on keeping ' safe '.
What I learned through this - was - I wasn't as safe as I could be - like most here - I'm no tech genious.
So I did something about it.
Any more questions ??
Oh - I played one word game - bored me to tears - I deleted it - I don't play games. lol

Apparently they are sending people bill reminders at the moment, and people are not happy. They could at least have offered those who are affected by the breach a free month.
As for security, who don't they and other companies do what banks do (I posted a link a few days ago)?

I am not even sure why you dragged defrag into the security mix.
I must admit I am envious of your level of freely disposable income
while all my PC's are eBay hand me downs.
Never been 'hacked' though. Hacker is a funny term people use to
shift the blame to bad individuals trying to 'break in' to their computer
while in actual fact they simply provide a door way for the careless
to walk through and give away their logins.

I think the trouble with the Optus hack is that customers themselves have not necessarily been careless. You'd expect the highest levels of protection from a big company like Optus. They didn't get it and from what the government is suggesting, Optus isn't working fast enough to cover the breaches.
I have heard Optus will have to cover passport and licence costs for those affected but I have yet to see a detailed report about how they are going to do this. Maybe it is out there, I have not been online a lot, but instead of just reporting what happened, maybe the reports would be better listing the steps people could take next.
Not everyone is free all day to go line up for new licences etc which is all I am seeing on the news.

Indeed I did.
The more I read the more I learned.
I didn't even know I had ' Firmware ' - was it being automatically updated - not only for performance but security - I now do.
The guy will come every 3 months - to give it a check.
Thought I explained why I mentioned defrag - you'll have to read back.
As for the disposable income envy (lol) - I worked my butt off for many years to enjoy that which I now enjoy - not being able to travel for the past couple of years - which I have done most years - at least a couple of times a year - left a bit more to dispose of.
And - no - I haven't been hacked either.

I have never been hacked either, but I do pay attention - never clicking on suspicious links of course, and never even typing my password or cc details directly (I copy and paste them) because of keystroke logging cyberattacks (still happening, apparently, although it is one of the oldest forms of cyberattacks). I also regularly update my antivirus etc.
As Springy said, in the Optus cyberattack it was Optus that was careless with security measures, not its poor victims.
