Best Film: I'd give it to Gravity but it will probably be won by 12 Years A Slave. American Hustle has a first class cast but it gets a bit confusing & the ending lacks gravitas. 12 Years is a beautifully crafted film that makes a powerful statement but that doesn't make it any more likeable. I think the Academy may be swayed by their wish to be seen supporting the descendants of those who were so wronged. They like to make political points.
Best Director: No idea. They have all done a good job, maybe Scorsese for his meticulous plotting of The Wolf of Wall Street.
Best Actor: Leo Dicaprio by the length of the strait. He is in almost every scene of the 3 hours of The Wolf of Wall Street, he narrates it as well & he carries the entire film on his back. He gives a tour-de-force performance that few other actors could have carried off. He appears to have taken De Niro's place as the muse of Martin Scorses & I hope they combine for more movies as good as this one.
Best Actress: Form would point to Cate Blanchett. Of the other nominees only Amy Adams doesn't have an Oscar & I cannot see her being rewarded for her role in American Hustle. But that's just me, good luck to her if she wins.
Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence is so good in American Hustle I almost dropped my popcorn. While I found her character to be a dislikeable person, isn't that the mark of a good performance when they can get to you like that? She is nothing like any of her previous roles & I for one could never have imagined she could have done it so well. I haven't seen Nebraska & there's a lot of talk about June Squibb's part in that. I'll leave it to the Academy, they can figure it out.
Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto. I can almost guarantee his win. He's that good. Perhaps Jonah Hill in Wall Street has a chance, he has a wild eyed craziness about him that's well done. However Leto's final scene brought tears to my eyes while Hill just got irritating.

Let's hope so. Unless the defence kicks the legs out from under the prosecution case.

McConaughey deserved the win.
