WE HAVE on our doorstep one of the seven wonders of the natural world - the Great Barrier Reef.
It comprises more than 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays, and is the world's largest coral reef.
The work being undertaken as part of the Catlin Global Reef Record is important.
The data being collected will help us to better protect all coral reefs.
Its chief scientist says up to half of coral worldwide has been lost in the past five decades.
Professor Ove Hoegh-Guilberg points to pollution, over-fishing and climate change as the key causes.
This must be worrying to all of us.
Our natural environment is part of who we are, as Queenslanders and Australians, and no measures can be spared to ensure it survives for coming generations.
Right now, the Great Barrier Reef is the only living thing on Earth which is visible from space.
Let's hope that it can be seen by our grandchildren and great-grandchildren in its full natural glory.
Let's get behind any measures to protect it.
It takes a long time for them little corals to build up a reef.

Natural wonders have no value in the financial world unless they have something under them that can be mined.
I always thought being a proud Australian was to be proud of and take care of your land.
No, being a proud Australian is standing infront of the flag before an election and excluding no whites and non christians.
Go Australia!
