Paid Parental Leave

So let me get this straight -

This budget, Abbott/Hockey will be taking away the modest $11,000 minimum wage Paid Parental Leave entitlement currently available to mothers in some workplaces if they also have access to other schemes.

Yet up until 2 months ago, under Abbotts own Parental Scheme, women would recieve Paid Parental Leave at their substantive position salary AND would be able to double dip into other schemes.

How do you go from the ridiculously over-generous to taking things away??

Why do I have the feeling that this budget is going to be as scatterbrained as the last one which will make it impossible for other parties to agree to see it through?

Many employers already pay PPL and then the recipient gets another bite of the cherry by subsidies from the taxpayer. That loophole will be closed today in the budget.

But funny how that  "loophole" wasn't going to be closed to those highly paid women who as part of the Abbotts PPL program would have had the parental leave at their substantive salaries PLUS were eligible for any other entitlements that formed part of their enterprise agreement.

Suddenly it's an issue? When only three (THREE!) months ago, Abbott was prepared to give women the world?

All this shows is how incomprehensible and inconsistent and disorganised this current government is.

Also the PPL for stay at home mothers? people who were not even in the workforce,  what a joke, have a child, get baby bonus, get another handout to stay at home to look after your child but the taxpayers have to pay you for it? I hope that little rort will be closed today also.

What PPL for stay at home mums?

One billion dollars a week, I'll repeat it, one billion dollars a week is what the Australian people are losing to pay down Labors debt.

imo Hockey hasn't gone far enough.

Now lets ask Shorten: what's he going to do to assist the government to pay down the debt that is going to see this country in deficit for decades, what does this mean? it means that we will eventually drop in living standards, welfare will be cut back because we can't afford it and all the while we are served up the whingeing on here when a hand out is threatened.

Labor failed in government, failed to such an extent that successive governments are going to be punished for Labors incompetence and here we still have the ripe hypocrisy about chaos and dysfunction mouthed by Shorten hoping to gain traction and repeated on here ad infinitum.

it may be more than that now as the LNP have doubled the deficit over the short time they've been in office

Shorten isn't in government. It may pay to remember that the LNP is and has been in government for over 18 months. It is not up to the Labor party to come up with solutions for failed policies when they are not in power.

LNP hasn't passed most of last year's budget which didn't happen when Labor was in. As mentioned previously, world economists, world banks and other eminent experts on fiscal policy all negated the claim that there was a debt and deficit left by Labor. However, we are now at double the debt, risking our AAA rating, record low interest rates and all the talking down of the economy has left us with businesses not wanting to invest due to lack of confidence.

$1 billion a year is not a lot of money when we are talking about welfare across the board. It covers age pensions, disability, unemployment etc. But there's also superannuation tax concessions will cost $50.7billion by the end of next year, $14billion fossil fuel subsidies to the mining companies, $24billion for fighter jets that don't fly, $20billion on submarines, $3.3 billion on offshore detention, $80billion on tax avoidence etc. etc.

$1billion to look after the disadvantaged doesn't really make as a big a dent as it seems.

One $billion a week is though and that's the pay down interest on Labors debt. One $billion a week that doesn't even touch the principle debt  and here you are saying, well a billion a year isn't much. Well count up all the not spo much  billion a year, which we have to borrow, and look what happens.

Yes we have to borrow this money because we are currently spending more than we make. Still sound like not much for a handout?

Again it may pay to remember where we were at the start of the last election. Labor had an $18billion deficit. And that was after coming through the GFC which was praised world wide for how it was handled in this country.  Joe has said this was the biggest financial crisis this country has ever seen. Within a week of coming into govt, Hockey increased the deficit to $30billion and then blamed labor. But tonight he is going to announce a $40 billion deficit. After declaring quite proudly that the govt would be in surplus in the first year and every year after that no matter what 'mess' labour left. So it can't be had both ways. The only people crying labour's debt and deficit are the LNP. Anyone with an ounce of knowledge of the economy has now realised that it wasn't  and isn't true. They can repeat the 'fixing labour mess' mantra till the cows come home. Doesn't mean it is true.
