Two Queensland women could face time in prison after breaking into a pound overnight and releasing all of the dogs.
The pair, both 21, allegedly broke into the Rockhamptom Regional Council pound with the intention of cutting the padlocks on the doors holding one of the women's dogs, theDaily Mercury reported.
But instead they decided to break all the locks and set the animals free.
Senior Sergeant Neill Smith said police were notified after council officers discovered the empty cages this morning.
One of the women was taken in for questioning, which led police to the second culprit.
The pair have been charged with one count of causing wilful damage, which carries a maximum jail term of five years.
A Queensland Police spokesman could not confirm their motive for the break-in.
They are due to appear at Rockhampton Court on December 3.
It is understood the escaped dogs have been since retrieved.

Five years for letting dogs out of a council pound?
Yet Thomas Kelly killer Kieran Loveridge only got four years?

A bit different from releasing dogs who could have ended up hungry and scared strays in a hostile environment.
I hope and pray that they were rehomed and not killed at the pound.

Yes agreed, but my point was the penalty for the girls action. It could by 5 years, as against the penalty of only 4 years for the killer of Thomas Kelly.

Reminds me of a book I read many years ago-Turtle Diary by Russell Hoban- about a couple who steal a turtle from a zoo and release it into the sea.It was made into a movie starring Ben Kingsley and Glenda Jackson.
Reminds me of a book I read, many years ago also, Spot.
"The Plague Dogs", by Richard Adams.
from Wikipedia:
"This book tells of the escape of two dogs, Rowf and Snitter, from a government research station in the Lake District in England, where they had been horribly mistreated. They live on their own with help from a red fox, or "tod", who speaks to them in a Geordie dialect. After the starving dogs attack some sheep on the fells, they are reported as ferocious man-eating monsters by a journalist. A great dog hunt follows, which is later intensified with the fear that the dogs could be carriers of a dangerous bioweapon, such as the bubonic plague."

It has a semi-happy ending, from memory. I must see if I can find it and read it again.

Could be an apt penalty if any of those dogs were impounded because they were dangerous and then went on to kill someone.

Could be. But that's a long long shot.
As joz said, they probably won't get five years.
I agree, they shouldnt've done it.
