"The lions of Islam have avenged our Prophet," Abu Mussab, who fights for IS insurgents in Syria, told Reuters via internet connection. "These are our lions. It's the first drops – more will follow," he said, speaking via an internet connection from Syria. He added that he and his fellow fighters are happy about the incident.
Mussab said he did not know the gunmen who carried out the attack, but added "they are on the path of the emir [IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi]....and our Sheikh Osama (bin Laden)."
Reports suggest that the cartoons portraying Prophet Mohammed published earlier by the satirical paper were the reason for the attack. The gunmen reportedly called out the victims by name, shouting: “We have avenged the prophet."
The religion of peace at it again.

i'm sure they were aware of the possible
consequences but ultimately, they were not
breaking the law and nothing justifies this:
executing a police officer who begs for his life:

I just had a quick glance at the link posted earlier; if all the cartoons there are from this magazine then these people seemed to insult just about everybody; seems to be pretty awful right wing bleep.

Charlie Hebdo (French pronunciation: [ʃaʁli ɛbdo]; French for Weekly Charlie) is a French satirical weekly newspaper, featuring cartoons, reports, polemics, and jokes. Irreverent and stridently non-conformist in tone, the publication is strongly antireligious[2] and left-wing, publishing articles on the extreme right, Catholicism, Islam, Judaism, politics, culture, etc.

French newspaper Le Figaro condemned Charlie Hebdo's decision to proceed with its "silly provocations." Laurent Fabius, the foreign minister, told France Info radio that the decision was like pouring "oil on the fire" that was caused by a YouTube video in the U.S. — titled "The Innocence of Muslims" — that disparaged the prophet, according to The New York Times.
Following the predictable uproar triggered by the issue, the French government was forced to close embassies, consulates, cultural centers and schools in about 20 countries.
I think the more bad behaviour we accept from media etc, the worse it will get.
Not an excuse to kill people but it's like lighting a fire and hoping no one gets burned.

a bit more on that, not only was he sacked but he was also charged
Maurice Sinet, 80, who works under the pen name Sine, faces charges of "inciting racial hatred" for a column he wrote last July in the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. The piece sparked a summer slanging match among the Parisian intelligentsia and ended in his dismissal from the magazine.
