Paris manhunt: 3 gunmen at large, 12 shot dead at Charlie Hebdo offices

No terrorist group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, an Islamic State militant praised the attack on the French satirical magazine on Wednesday.

"The lions of Islam have avenged our Prophet," Abu Mussab, who fights for IS insurgents in Syria, told Reuters via internet connection. "These are our lions. It's the first drops – more will follow," he said, speaking via an internet connection from Syria. He added that he and his fellow fighters are happy about the incident.

Mussab said he did not know the gunmen who carried out the attack, but added "they are on the path of the emir [IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi]....and our Sheikh Osama (bin Laden)."

Reports suggest that the cartoons portraying Prophet Mohammed published earlier by the satirical paper were the reason for the attack. The gunmen reportedly called out the victims by name, shouting: “We have avenged the prophet."

The religion of peace at it again.

It has happened here twice so far and yet somehow people are saying we somehow invited it because of our western democracy and lifestyle.

Twice ????

As in twice in Australia (Melbourne and Sydney) or twice world wide - Sydney and Paris ?

I think you are under counting.

Boston bombing can be added.

I meant in Australia, and yes the Boston bombing was appalling, there is no end to their cowardly attacks all over the world.

How did we invite the attacks at Port Arthur, Hoddle Street, Strathfield Plaza, Russell Street, etc.?

Each beat the death tally of the muslim attackers.

Has anyone heard what the story is with the third person, the one who handed himself in?  There are reports that he was in school at the time and handed himself in because his name was getting broadcast as one of the murderers.

That is all I heard so far glee, that the boy was in class at the time and other students vouched for him. They would want to hear that from the teacher as well I would think.

Latest developments on the 2 brothers:

  • A car chase is underway north-east of Paris amid reports of gunshots fired.
  • Two men who resembled the suspects Said and Cherif Kouachi were spotted in the Aisne region, north-east of Paris.
  • Reports in France suggest the men had robbed a petrol station in Villers-Cotterets.
  • Police are swarming the area, including the villages of Longpont and Corcy.
  • Officers discovered an abandoned car, thought to be the brothers' vehicle, in the area.
  • Police are investigating whether the brothers fled into a large forest.

8:15pm: A primary school and college are believed to be located a few hundred metres from where the suspects are believed to be holding hostages.

Reports all schools are confined and children are kept indoors with no entry or exit.

8:08pm: RTL Radio is reporting that one person has been killed and several injured in a shootout ahead of a hostage being taken in Dammartin-en-Goele.

This is yet to be confirmed by authorities.

They are said to have shouted "We are al-Qaeda, Yemen", an apparent reference to the al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula group (AQAP).
